Upgrading 750 Ti

Go to solution Solved by Vulturees,

Okay thanks for your help and recommendation guys, RX470 it is then. I'll mark this as the answers.

Hi there, I'm about to upgrade my current GPU which is only about 1.5 / 2 years old.

Why I'm upgrading is because there is a Trade - In Event on one of my pc part sellers and regarding it is hard on my country to sell a used gpu I'm thinking why not upgrade it rather than in 2 - 3 years later I'll upgrade and just leave my 750 Ti unused also because the limitation of 2GB VRAM and I play games like Watchdogs 2, GTA V and Skyrim this limits my VRAM breathing room and let to stutters whenever the VRAM is swapping.

So the Trade - In extra price I need to upgrade are as below (the terms for the trade in is that I must trade it with the same brand):

From my Asus Strix GTX 750 Ti OC 2GB

To

(I have to convert the currency to USD)

Asus GTX 960 DirectCU II OC 4GB Strix = $183.80

Asus GTX 1050 Ti OC 4GB Strix = $142.54

Asus Radeon RX 470 4GB Strix = $189.42

I'm currently aiming the 1050 since it is cheaper, and I'm trying to limit the budget not more than $180 in my currency.

But after researching a bit and watching some benchmark results the RX 470 is winning most of them but with slight disadvantages

1. Higher Temp (regarding research about AMD products)

2. From the benchmark showing AMD consumes larger power, almost 30 - 45% more I think (if I convert it correctly)

3. I never use any AMD products at all, so I'm kind of new to it.

Which one is better for maybe 2 - 3 years or maybe 1 - 2 years if 3 years is too long (since game is advancing rapidly on graphics)?

My specs:

Motherboard : Gigabyte Z87X-OC

Processor : Intel i7 - 4770K

Ram : 8GB

PSU : 700w Silverstone

Monitor: I haven't check but my highest resolution is 1680 x 1050 in most games.

Thank you before :)

My budget actually around $160 - $170, is it enough if I just take 1050 Ti or should I spend more for 960 or maybe the totally new for me the RX470?

960 significantly more expensive than 1050ti which performs the same...

So this goes down to 470 vs 1050ti and 470 wins.

But pricing for me shows that 480 4gb is only slightly more expensive ($10 difference) and that would be best value for your money.

If u really cant get 480 4gb then go for 470. In either case you will see great FPS increase and can play on 1080p when u buy new monitor :)

Anything I should now about AMD perhaps from an AMD users? How's the temperature on peak performance?

I'm living in a hot country so I'm afraid of my components lifetime if it is reaching too hot. Also I've added a reply about my post before.

My 480 peaked at 80 in a crap case but never thermal throttled, if you get an AIB card you will get much better temps

Thank you so I'll scratch 960.

For RX480 in my country I need to add $236.31 more which is too much then I can afford.

470 or used 480.

Tbh I have no idea where I can find a used gpu on my country.

So if I'm switching from Nvidia to AMD is there anything I should do or know before I do the switch? Never do this switching before I'm afraid I'll break my PC because of different driver or something else.

Anything from MSI, Sapphire, Asus etc. who are partnered with AMD and NVIDIA to produce custom desogn for the cards.

I would remove the drivers of your old card, install the new drivers of the card you are getting (old card still in your system). Then, power it down, switch the cards, and turn the machine back on. It should work like magic then.

Not all people do it this way, but I like the feeling of installing the card, and not having to worry about drivers afterwards. :P

Well, it's a trade in so if I want to get my new gpu I have to hand over the old one first.

Will it work if I plug in the new gpu and then remove the nvidia driver while installing amd? Or should I install amd's driver first then remove nvidia's?

Just make sure you use DDU to uninstall the graphics driver from Nvidia otherwise they can conflict like cray cray.

Is it okay if I plug in my new gpu first then uninstall nvidia 's driver then install AMD driver?

Or do I need to uninstall nvidia's driver before I plug in the new gpu?

@Vulturees what games do you play?

Currently I'm playing Watchdogs 2, Farcry Primal, GTAV, Skyrim Special Edition, MGS5. But I'm also hoping my new gpu will be enough for another 2 years maybe.

After researching a bit about AMD I noticed it doesn't have physX, since I'm a long user of Nvidia's products I need a bit insight on this as well.

I personally would recommend AMD for budget stuff. they really stepped to the plate in the rx4XX series. The only competitor IMO that's worth looking at is the gtx 1050ti. If you are looking for just a, plug and play don't worry about it, experience then I'd go for the 1050ti. Otherwise (and if you can afford it, the rx470 is phenomenal for the money).

edit:

The 3 cards you listed will age about the same, since they all have the same amount of vram and very similar compute power. and unless youre going to overclock the heck out of it, the worst the higher temp on the gpu is going to do is raise the system temp (there for your cpu temp) up by a couple degrees. As long as its under roughly 83 degrees, you're fine.

Thank you for explaining, I know the prices for AMD RX470 outside of my country is cheaper but in my country the 1050 Ti OC is much more cheaper than the RX470, the price is around $80 cheaper. And which confusing me since the price differences in my country.

Okay I was making a conclusion to get RX470, but when I was about to go and buy it I watched a GTX 1060 3GB review.

So I check on my trade in event and I need to add around $185 - $190 which is quite a lot and off from my budget actually, but my curiosity kicks in and so I ask here again and sorry for bothering you guys again.

Should I just stick with RX470 which have a larger VRAM but loses at performance around 10% - 15% than RX470?

I'm thinking in the future which is 2 - 3 years from now those 3GB maybe will be running low but then again in 2 - 3 years if I buy 1060 3GB now I will be changing in 3 - 4 years as well right?

Now I'm having a bigger dilemma than choosing GTX 1050 Ti with RX470.

my vote is for the rx470, or wait and save up for rx480/gtx1060.6gb.

My logic is: if you want it to last 3-4 years get something good now. getting less 470 may only give you 2 years, but really depending on what setting you want to play which games at. 1050ti seems to be doing alright right now at 1080p, but i'm guessing will decline fast. vram will help with more details/textures now but especially in the future.
