Is this a trick question?
Yes, it is possible, and to double check myself, I found the answer in 30 seconds googling it.

That isn't to claim you motherboard can support it.

You should consult with your motherboard manufacturer on whether you can or cannot.
For example, my motherboard needed a bios upgrade for me to go from an Athlon 64 to a Phenom 2 945.

Socket 939? Buy a 4200+, they're very common and very cheap. They start at like 2.2ghz which is good enough for web browsing and Youtube watching. You can also OC it pretty well, I have one that I OC'd to 2.8ghz with stock voltages. What is the model of your motherboard? What CPU do you have now? Be sure your motherboard supports multicore CPUs.

i7 2600k @ 5GHz 1.49v - EVGA GTX 1070 ACX 3.0 - 16GB DDR3 2000MHz Corsair Vengence

Asus p8z77-v lk - 480GB Samsung 870 EVO w/ W10 LTSC - 2x1TB HDD storage - 240GB SATA SSD w/ W7 - EVGA 650w 80+G G2

3x 1080p 60hz Viewsonic LCDs, 1 glorious Dell CRT running at anywhere from 60hz to 120hz

Model M w/ Soarer's adapter - Logitch g502 - Audio-Techinca M20X - Cambridge SoundWorks speakers w/ woofer

I see, so I guess it depends on which version of the cpu OP has. I don't see it working on different sockets, or maybe it was different back then and it just worked *shrug*

From what I can see from a Google search, you should be fine to install a 4200+ 939. You just won't be able to OC, which you probably didn't wanna do anyway so no loss. ^^
