Guys i know 64bit processing on the mobile side mainly brings about the ability to address more than 4gb of RAM and some performance improvements but i cant help but wonder that this could bring about a "Post PC Era"

I mean come on. the PC also uses 64 bit processing and with Apple's tight control over their store., development tools. the transition should be much smoother than the desktops is to 64bit from 32.

It would really be interesting if you can find Desktop App counterparts on the iPAD with the same performance and functionality. Imagine creating 3D designs on your iPAD damnnn.. if that were to happen.. A post PC era where everybody uses a tablet [maybe not phone] as their laptop/desktop replacement might become a reality .. What the heck.. some people are already doing that now

What do you guys think? Will such a day come? Will 64bit processing on the mobile side bring about the post PC era?

PS: If i am missing any info or if i made some wrong points do point it out to me.. I aint really that knowledgeable about these stuff.. but just really interested :)

when we have mobile devices that need a 64bit processor cause the have more then 4GB ram then we probable have desktops that is much much more powerful and tools and programs that demand much much more and thats why the dedicated big desktop will never die.

My rig : CPU: Intel i7 4820K   Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X79S-UP5-WIFI   RAM : Kingston hyper X 2133MHz 2x 8GB total 16GB   CPU-Cooling : Corsair H60 V2   SSD : Intel 335 series 180GB   PSU : Corsair RM series 750w   Chassi : Corsair Graphite 600T   GPU : Asus radeon HD7750 ( gonna upgrade soon )

The introduction of 64 bit onto these types of devices (e.g. phones) is definitely NOT the start of the "post PC era" .  It is simply progression. Having said that, personal computers, as they are today, will not exist forever.  In the near future we will be using small form factor devices that communicate with a central "grid" computer which does the heavy computing and then streams it to said device in real time.

So True! I agree with the Grid thing.. Especially now Nvidia is trying to start it up..  but i wonder when that will come though.. Personally i will still want my own PC.. i mean come on.. DIY PC is a hobby.. if you take that way from me.. i might not have anything left.. LOL

Exactly, the Shield is a start.  And I know I love building PCs and hardware so I guess that will change to DIY grids :P

Yea definitely current mobile devices cant even touch what desktop's can do.. But just think about it.. wouldnt enabling 64bit processing allow FUTURE mobile devices to do stuff the desktop's can?.. Just think of the possibilities! I might be ignorant in this but still from what i knw this can be possible in the future.. What we need now is just the right SoC and the Apps that can take full advantage of this in order to provide functionalities their desktop counterparts have.

That would be so Exciting!

Just giving my own 2cents though.. dont really know if this can even work.

DIY GRIDS!? What is that man.. never heard of it. LOL.. but if that really happens it will be soooo cool.. come on.. just think about having your own Grid where your family [maybe friends?] can access? Damnnnnn! omg this is really getting me excited..

I guess the first thing that needs to happen is for the Wireless Display technology to improve.. Improve till it is readily available on the mainstream market with superrrr low latency. Well thats what Shield is all about anyway :)
