Nvidia vs AMD for Davinci Resolve

So I was thinking of buying a Haswell Xeon because Davinci Resolve is lagging on my current CPU, but before I do that, is there any used older platform (maybe x79?) that I could get the CPU and board for about $300 that would do better than that?

 

I'm also looking for an excuse to replace my mATX board with an ATX one

I don't think upgrading to something for $300 with CPU + Mobo will be a good upgrade - you aren't going to get any appreciable performance difference. Try going with an i7 - 7700K?

For video editing? The 5820K/6800K is much better and costs pretty much the same.....

I could get a Haswell Xeon which is close to an i7-4770 for around $150. 

 

I could also get an X79 8 core 16 thread Xeon and motherboard for about $350.

Yeah I'm pretty sure, it's a professional color grading and editing program. It amazes me that it's free.

AFAIK, DaVinci Resolve is more GPU dependant, but I could be wrong.....

You don't have to.... You can have an Nvidia GPU solely for rendering if you want....

Would I have to switch the default card whenever I wanted to edit or can it just sit in a PCIe slot without being plugged into a monitor?

Be aware a lot of the cheaper Xeon E5 v3 and v4 CPUs on ebay are ES (Engineering Samples). I got an E5-2683v3 14 core and it works fine, but the turbo is lower than a retail one. Still a lot of power for not a lot of cash.

 

If DR can use a lot of cores, and doesn't need AVX2 you might get a dual E5 v1 or v2 for similar cash. I got a server with dual E5-2650 with 64GB ECC ram for equivalent to US$380 and pricing here is usually worse than in US.

It can just sit in a PCIe slot and be used only while rendering....You don't have to plug a monitor into it... I would recommend the GTX 1060 6GB, as it is pretty fast and efficient as well

A 7700K is NOT a $700 upgrade. $350 for CPU and $150-200 for motherboard.
