Hey Guys,

I'm currently in the process of planning my first PC build. Although I have built PCs with friends and toyed around with existing builds, I've never done it all from scratch myself. I have most of my parts selected, but I wanted to just put it out there to see if anyone has any opinions, or if I've completely overlooked something that will come back to bite me once I try to put it all together. Personal opinions and criticisms are welcome :)

Parts List

To give a bit of background, the PC is going to become another (perhaps primary) location where I game. I currently own an Xbox one, and although I'm quite happy with it, I'd love to see the best the world has to offer.

The computer will be setup in my quite spacious room, close enough to hook up to my 40 inch TV if need be. I only have 2 power points, and the PC will most likely be plugged into a power board which has other appliances already connected, I'm a little worried this could be a problem since there seems to be a lot of power being drawn already from these two sockets.

I am not near the router in the house, so internet access is still one thing I'm not entirely sure about in the build. However, a couple of friends have mentioned to me ethernet over power adapters. If anyone has any experience with these I'd love to hear how you got on. Of course I could go wireless, but I feel like that's frowned upon. :/

1. Budget & Location

See the link to my part list. I'm already over what I wanted to spend, but I can afford it with a bit of money shuffling.

I am Australian, so the parts are in $AUD

2. Aim

The computer will primarily be used for gaming, but I may also perform programming work on there for university or my job.

I would consider video playback from a HDD and also streaming via YouTube as a secondary main use.

3. Monitors

Initially, I am going to run 1 2560 x 1440 monitor. Currently, the monitor I have on my parts list is running at 60Hz, but if I come across a decent 144Hz monitor I may run that instead.

As mentioned above, I will also be connecting the computer to my TV (with HDMI in) occasionally.

In the future I wouldn't mind adding a secondary monitor, or maybe upgrading to 4K if my rig could run games at that resolution and I could find an affordable display.

4. Peripherals

For now, I am not going to buy a mouse, keyboard, or headphones, since I already have some that would work fine. My mouse and keyboard are wireless cheapies that I am not too concerned with for the moment. I will use either my Audio Technica M50xs or Astro A40s for audio.

I will however need to purchase a version of Windows.

5. Why are you upgrading?

I am building this as I have always wanted to build a PC, and now that I work as a programmer, I feel that having a beefy machine is sort of a rite of passage, and also that having a better understanding of the internals will make me better at my job.

And then there's the most important reason....

Cause I want to!

Thanks,

Jesse

thats a nice setup you will be able to game well on that the main change i wod make is go for an all in one water cooler because your cpu can go to 5ghzish and i dont think having an air cooler would be a good idea.

but aside from that its a good build will with overclocking headroom and plenty of punch

i also like the case looks good

Not really needed, OP already stated he is over budget, budget air will be fine for a small OC. Why such an expensive PSU? 700W is way overkill, 500W is enough. Does it need to be titanium? You could get similar quality gold for much less (RMx, G2, ect).

Thanks Josh, though I'me not sure about the water cooling as I'm already really at the maximum price I'd like to spend, and I don't have any experience with water cooling so if something went wrong I'd be more hesitant to play around with it.

I will consider it before buying though.

I've been told that investing in a power supply is a good thing to do. What is the main use case for buying a titanium? Would that be for server like builds that should be up for long periods of time?

yeah i understand it wasnt so much you have to get it it was just the only thing i could think of and i also live in australia and no how hot it gets at times having water cooling during long gaming on hot days having water cooling makes me more comfy in the hot days knowing im not going to kill my cpu.

yeah the power supply is a bit over kill but if you ever wanted to go sli then not having to get a new power supply as well would save you money down the road.

Its defiantly important to get a good PSU, but no need to overpay. Titanium doesn't refer to quality, just efficiency (Although higher end models are generally more efficient, not always though). There are better quality PSUs that would last longer for less, even if they are slightly less efficient (RMx, G2/3).

i would stick with it your right  investing in a power supply is a good thing you could go to gold and save some money you can get some good gold rated power supplies but its a good one so unless you really feel like you need to save the money on it id stick with it

It can get very hot, but that is dependant one where you live and use your PC. Heat isnt really going to kill your CPU. Only an issue if you turn voltage up significantly, and it should throttle to prevent damage anyway.

i no heat isnt but its more about my not wanting my cpu being in the 70 80 degree range on a 40 degree day, i live in melbourne and at times it can be 40 degrees days in a row but i dont want that to stop me from being able to play, during those days my cpu hangs around 60 degrees and that im ok with.

it might not be needed but another 2 might be a good idea so you can have 2 on the front 1 on the top and 1 on the back plus you will have the 2 for your cpu cooler but i think there connected to the same plug by the looks of it
