from the pcper review, 290 handily (>10%) beats 780 in many games (except when "akimbo"-ing GPUs... well AMD has issues with that, I get it)

Is this the card to get?

And I know CoolBeans is gonna say, "waiting for non-reference 290X"

if anything, it's pretty remarkable... $399 vs. $499..

Now I can go back to the "You want to buy a $100 cooler from NVidia... Be my guest. My wallet and I will be shopping for our own cooler; thank you very much!" argument.

No because it's reference. Unless you are already deaf and don't mind your GPU running at 95 degrees Celsius, don't get it.

I'm also going to wait for Linus' video and benchmarks because he OC's the GPU's.

That's a pretty half-brained, unintelligent argument towards a subject over function over form.

Is there any realization here of features that only Nvidia offers, such as G-SYNC, Shield Streaming, ShadowPlay, PhysX, CUDA, etc. And don't get me wrong, AMD does awesome stuff too. Mantle, a better multi-screen solution, better price/performance ratio, etc. It's just that you are using such a useless argument when in reality, non-reference 290s and 290Xs will cost more than reference. And reference vs reference, the Nvidia GTX 770/780/780Ti/Titan cooler wins by miles. Function, acoustics, temps, etc.

Well it probably helps that they're dissipating 50 or more watts less than the AMD side. For as little concern I have about power consumption, I'd rather AMD tried to make everything more efficient, instead of brute forcing their way through. Just look at their procs. They need twice the cores to compete with top end i5s.

Exactly. AMD clearly isn't taking competition seriously, and it shows. I love them, but as long as they do this, they will not succeed.

I agree the reference Nvidia GTX 770/780/780Ti/Titan cooler wins by miles. I agree the reference Rx 2xx(x) cooler suck.

How does "when in reality, non-reference 290s and 290Xs will cost more than reference" have anything to do with my statement? Let alone make it useless? That seems to be your only reason why my argument is half-brained and unintelligent.

Most people only use Nvidia's card's acoustics and temps to justify paying $100 more. Obviously guys like you who need a certain Nvidia feature don't argue this way, and that's much more intelligent (and unfortunately subjective, so no argument can be had).

It really all comes down to features.

NVIDIA's cards, in my opinion, have more features like Shadowplay, PHYSx, Game Streaming, etc. That coupled with better temps / acoustics justify the cost.

However, AMD cards a great value for the money and get great performance. It really just comes down to fanboyism and deciding if those features matter to you or not.

In case anyone was wondering, Tomshardware chucked an Arctic Air cooler on it, the thing is pretty damn quiet and overclocks better than stock too.

AMD chose more cores over better single core performance. Obviously Intel looks better, but that is only because they are using last gen software to compare. Have you even seen an AMD CPU road-map?

I do like how Nvidia's cards have those features. They are a smart business for having them locked down. AMD has their own features that set them apart equally as well.

It does come down to fanboyism (unless it was 6 months ago and Nvidia was the only one with 780 caliber cards).

Slap one of those on a 290, and now you have a card $25 cheaper than a 780. It should overclock just as well, maintaining equality performance-wise.

Now we can argue about the subjective stuff.
