Hello,

Let me get straight to the point:

I am invested into my computer as it is and I need the ability to run just about anything. That's it.

Scenario:

I am in High School currently and have a job where I will be needed to use Photoshop consistently.

I will be editing product photos for a website. I need to be able to complete each photo with the optimal

efficiency and quality. College is just around the corner and I am going to be majoring in Engineering and

Computer Science. So I need to be able to render objects and who knows what else. I want the computer to last

from now until the end of college and then some, if possible. Also, keep in mind that I love the occasional game

when streaming to my Nvidia Shield so a Kepler GPU is required.

Where I Need Help (Components):

  • Corsair 900D
  • 2x Western Digital Black 2TB
  • Asus PA279Q WQHD True Color Professional Monitor (2560x1440)
  • 2x ASUS GTX 780 DCUll 3GB (Probably needs changing)
  • Corsair AX1200i Full Modular PSU
  • Corsair K70 Cherry MX Blues
  • Razer DeathAdder 2013
  • Arctic Silver Thermal Paste
  • 32GB (4x8GB) or 16GB (4x4GB) G.Skill Ripjaws Z series 1866 RAM
  • ASUS Rampage IV 2011 X79
  • i7-4930K Unlocked Haswell Processor 2011
  • Samsung 840 EVO 240GB SSD
  • Water cooling for the CPU and the 780's
  • Blue Yeti Microphone
  • Sennheiser HD555 Headphones

Total Cost will be around $5700-$6000 US Dollars

The Problem:

I am still semi-inexperienced when it comes to what is necessary in a workstation

please feel free to offer suggestions on what to upgrade or downgrade so I will not be

wasting this much money on something I don't need.

Thank you.

WAYYYYYYY overkill get a 4770k and a 6gb 780it when it comes out

Rampage 4 extreme is a waste trust me unless you are doing crazy LN2 overclocks it's pointless

3930k, asus rampage board, h100 or something similar (will leave it to fellow members to pick) 1xsamsung 250gb ssd, itll be cheaper and have the same write speeds because 128gbs tend to suffer in write speeds compared to 250gb drives).
get 4x4gb of ram, there arnt many things that benefit from more than 8gb of ram let alone 16 but whatever, quad channel is awesome.

Thank you for the charts. I might leave the other 4 slots of the quad channel open.

and the 4930k is only $40 dollars more for a better optimized platform.

I forgot to mention the water cooling will be a custom loop.

making changes in the original post now.

Why is the 4930K overkill?

And that's what I was thinking with the 780 ti

Keep it if you want X79 but it looks like a 4770k will be enough

If you do want to stay with X79 get a WS board or rampage 4 formula depending on use case

I am going to keep the 4930K just, for lack of a better word, "future-proof" the desktop even further.

I just wish the formula had 8 slots for RAM for the ability to upgrade. A really compelling board for the price however.

What is the difference between the WS boards?

Did anyone see the new Rapage IV Extreme Black Edition?

Let me guess--your parents are paying for this?

What kind of work are you currently doing? On what scale? Programs being used?

Any examples?

The workstations boards are designed for 24/7 heavy load overnight renders and such and usually come with a better warranty

For future proofing X79 is good in terms of upgradability but keep in mind that the chipset will be quite "weak" soon

Haha I wish they were, but no coming out of my own pocket.

And like I said currently I'm editing photos for products on a website, however this PC is going to be with me in college when I am an engineering and computer science major. As of now I don't have specifics on scale or programs, but I want to the PC to be able to handle anything and everything.

There's a certain point where getting a slightly stronger system isn't worth it. Unless you're making money that's reliant on how quickly you can finish a project, you'll be better of with a mid/high end system and upgrade as better and cheaper parts come out.

Other than PS, what other programs do you use? Any examples of your work?

So what exactly is wrong with the setup I have mentioned? I see what you are getting at. However, I need a desktop I can rely on for the next few years. It may come down to an internship where, like you said, quickly finishing a project is the main purpose.

There are cheaper, better value parts that will do the job only a bit worse. It won't make much of a difference like you wouldn't be able to do a project or not. Just slightly faster renders and such.

Btw, you won't be doing any heavy renders in Engineering--mostly simple things and maybe a decent simulation here or there.

As for photo editing, any decent system will be fine unless you're doing absolutely massive pictures with many layers that puts 4k to shame.

If you're doing super heavy renders at an internship, you will most likely also have access to a render farm.

What parts are not worth the money in your case? Pretty much all of what you have chosen.

What do you need the Blue Yeti for?

As for the system , something like this should be plenty: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1XGUJ
