So I have 165$ USD and I'm looking to upgrade my processor, but I don't really know whether it would be better to stick with AMD or buy a motherboard and processor for intel.

My current build:

GPU: RX 480 4GB

CPU: AMD FX-4170

Memory: 8gb ddr3

Motherboard: ASUS M5A97

I'm just not sure if I could get more value out of sticking with AMD or changing to Intel.  Also, if I go AMD I might be able to also afford an SSD.

Thanks for the help :).

Okay, thing is. With Ryzen you need the new am4 motherboard, and will also need ddr4 ram.

Your alternative is going with intel and getting a used 4k series CPU and having to buy an lga 1150 socket mobo

Regardless, Ryzen should influence the price of lesser (and equal) chips. Wait till Ryzen, and hopefully pay less.

So new ram would be about 50$ so that leaves 115$ for cpu and motherboard, would that be better than just picking up some newer budget amd cpu and an ssd?

You could pick up an FX 6300 or 8320 with an SSD to tide you over. You would get an increase, but in the end you will need to build new. FX is a dead end, but your not to the end of that street yet.

new ram is about $40. Motherboards will probably mot likely be able to be picked up for $50. that leaves 60 for your cpu. Which I'm sure AMD might offer something to counter Intel's pentiums. So maybe your set? Ofcourse, there's always the possibility of saving up some money to allow you to buy something that'll last you longer.

Buying the newer budget AMD cpus aren't worth it imo. They haven't had any significant improvement for a long while and all of Intel's options are currently better price/perf. (this is not including used market)

Ok, I guess I'll just wait to see what Ryzen does to prices, btw when I said newer, I was referring to something like a 6300, although I just realized they were both released in 2012 -.- my bad.
