Hi All,

I am considering a large upgrade to my PC which is turning 5 years old soon.

Current specs:

CPU: i5-2500k - OC to 4.0GHz

CPU Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper-212X

MOBO:  Asrock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3

SSD: Samsung 850EVO 500gb (Upgraded to recently will bring over to new build to pair with an M.2 drive probably)

HDD:  Seagate Barracuda 1TB

GPU:  Nvidia GTX570

RAM:  G.SKILL Sniper DDR3 1600 C9 2x4GB

PSU: Coolermaster GX Power 750Watt

Monitor 1: Samsung PLS 27" (not a good gaming monitor)

Monitor 2:Benq 1080p monitor

Case: Coolermaster storm enforcer

My PC is highly multi-purpose:

Uses:

-Programing

-Gaming

-Cad

-School work

-etc

Don't currently do any photo or video editing on it.

Aim: Would love to achieve 2k 120hz+ high-ultra settings for most games. (Screen to come at some point)

I do not plan on reusing anything from my previous build at this time as i would like to still have it.

Preferences:

CPU: i7-7700k

GPU: GTX1080 (May be a stretch)

Budget ~2000

Cheers

2000 what? what location ? a 2k 144hz monitor is gonna suck a quarter of that budget alone, a monitor, i7 board, ram and 1080 is gonna take the lot more than likely

Hi all, thanks for suggestions,

I am in AUS, sorry should have mentioned that. Budget i said was 2000, but there is some room to increase if i have to. (which looks extremely likely if i want to stick with these conditions)

The screen can be bought separately later on down the track once i regain some wealth, i have 2 working screens at the moment which will do. Its more of an end goal for the PC to be able to handle as i will definitely be moving to dual 2k monitors down the track.

Can probably drop the 1080 dream for a 1070 if its too expensive.

I'm still working on my own thoughts and will post them once i have had some time to go through the suggestions.

Cheers!

I would swap that 400 bucks m.2 SSD to HDD and use the saved money to get 1080. But if you definitely need the speed then its your choice.

Also, I would suggest EVGA G2 650W over NEX.

MSI, Gigabyte and ASUS are all good options, EVGA messed up the VRAM cooling with their new line up, but i am not sure if they fixed it already.

  • 1 month later...

Hi all,

Im yet to pull the trigger on this build as I couldn't see how I'd lose by waiting for the ryzen release, and then heard rumours about 1080ti so waited some more.

Waiting has had slight benefits cost wise, and hoping the 1080ti release tomorrow brings down the 1080 price.

The release of ryzen has put me in an awkward position though as I am now not sure what the better choice is for my needs. I'm tossing up between the i7-7700k and the 1700 or 1700x. I would like the PC to have some longevity to it and I'm thinking the Ryzen will serve me better later down the line but I am slightly concerned with the ram issues and its only average gaming performance, especially if I want to go 2k 100+hz. On the other hand, my other PC uses such as cad and programming would probably benefit from those extra cores.

I haven't put together a possible ryzen build but my assumption is it will cost around 2500AUD to get what I want. I would also just buy the best GPu I can get for budget 1080ti> 1080> 1070 . (Possibly extend budget again if I think it's worth it. 1080ti looks sweet but is a huge $1200aud)

Looking for some opinions on ryzen. Is it worth trading that gaming performance for some extra power elsewhere?

Will the extra cores serve me better say in 3-4 years, or is multithreaded applications not going anywhere fast?

Are Ryzens current problems a deal breaker?

Is it better to go Intel now and then reevaluate PC performance in 3 years and possibly upgrade again? (Probably an expensive option)

Any opinions appreciated.

Please let me know if you need any other information.

Thanks heaps
