Help friend find old PC Parts

Stigs
Go to solution Solved by Stigs,

Thanks everybody...I showed this to him last night, and now he has an idea of what he wants to do...Thanks for the help.

My friend is planning to build a computer at little to no cost.  He has gone to technology recycling centers to find parts, but he has no idea what to really look for.  He is planning to use this pc for emulators, non-intense games (older games), and everyday computing.  What should I tell him to look for at the recycling center or on ebay that is good for his needs?

older generation flagship products would be what I'd recommend, but people are not going to throw those away. If he's lucky he might find a Core2Quad and something like a 9600GT.

Asrock 890GX Extreme 3 - AMD Phenom II X4 955 @3.50GHz - Arctic Cooling Freezer XTREME Rev.2 - 4GB Kingston HyperX - AMD Radeon HD7850 - Kingston V300 240GB - Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB - Chieftec APS-750 - Cooler Master HAF912 PLUS

You can find core2duos (or quads) in a Dell optiplex type systems for decent prices on Ebay.  There are other business oriented pcs from other companies also...like HP DC desktops...I'm sure Compaq and others do also.

Dont think you need to look that far back... 1st gen i7's going cheap on ebay, and when OC'ed they still can pull there weight.

like the other guys said a core 2 duo or a x2/x4 will do fine

I was origianally going to say i7, but I don't know what exactly is his budget. When someone says little to no money I think sub 50$, so I played safe with C2Q :)

Yeah I see your point... could always get an AMD APU, super cheap and will be new. A6 5400k or A6 6400k. Boards are cheap as well.

I did a bit of eBay-ing and for around 100$ you can build a kickass gaming rig

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-Optiplex-745-w-Intel-Core-2-Duo-1-86GHz-2GB-160GB-DVDR-/121152169391?pt=Desktop_PCs&hash=item1c353b65af

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-OEM-Dell-Geforce-9800GT-512MB-DDR3-PCI-e-Video-Graphics-Card-P-N-37MT9-/360675653253?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53f9f1b685

If this were to be put together you would get something like this:

Intel C2D E6300 @1,86GHz

2GB DDR2 RAM (667MHz, my guess)

160GB HDD

XFX 9800GT

Corsair CX400 -> it's actually now sold as a CX430 and is capable of delivering 430W

Free WinXP Pro

Asrock 890GX Extreme 3 - AMD Phenom II X4 955 @3.50GHz - Arctic Cooling Freezer XTREME Rev.2 - 4GB Kingston HyperX - AMD Radeon HD7850 - Kingston V300 240GB - Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB - Chieftec APS-750 - Cooler Master HAF912 PLUS

Older unlocked pentium d (oh gawd the heat) but preferably a core 2 quad or duo with at least 2 gigs of ram and a 7950 gx2 lots of older flagship Used to be the fastest crap in the world stuff would work good.

The 9800GT I suggested is actually faster than the 7950GX2 :P

And it's only 35$. And it's manufacturer refurbished and has a matte black PCB :D
