Hello there, i recently found out that it is possible to overclock the I7 3820 when using a x79 motherboard like i have.

My question now is, if i need another cooler than the stock one (yea i got a good old rig going on, dont judge me) or basically how much volts the stock cooler can handle and what would be a stable overclock.

I do not want to go crazy with the OC, but 3.9GHz - 4GHz instead of the standard 3.6GHz would be nice. And if u know, then what else do i have to keep in mind when overclocking this dinosaur from Q1 2012?

thank you for your help, i really appreciate it and have a nice day ^^

I'd go with a Cryorig H7. I have one and I can get my i5-6600K to 4.5GHz and it still stays cool. Plus it's the same price as a 212 evo, but cooler, sexier, and quieter.

what do you mean by a dinosaur, i would get a 3820 over a 7600k any day, if you want a beefy cooler get a darkrock cooler, if small cooler h7 is a good bet. intel is taking advantage of them being for far ahead of amd so they are just sitting around doing nothing in the mainstream side. if you want you can get a 1080 or titan xp without any bottleneck.

Except the i7-3820 is based on sandy-bridge architecture which is now 5 generations old and the i5-7600K perform a lot better beating it even in multi-threaded loads and destroying it completely in single-thread performance:

it is accurate it's user based results you can run the benchmarks for yourself and add your results to the database.
