If you dont know what the.reg is doing then dont use it. Registry is like a dragon, if you poke it too much you will break things.

Thats why you would use notepad or Notepad++. Essentially .reg is just like .txt or .cfg file. Unless you run it, or open it with a software which it relates to, there's no harm. If you are really so scared, you can also setup VM or just Anti-virus sandbox to do it.
