I tried the search, sorry if it's already been answered. Are all 1150 socket motherboards compatible with all 1150 processor chips? I realize certain things like overclocking and such would be limited. Why i ask, is i want to build a light gaming setup using a 2nd gen (sandy bridge) i5 2400 chip. I'm just wondering what my options are, to keep costs as low as possible. thank you for any info you can give

They CAN be, but if you want to use an older board with that chip, then check the specific product page and see if the manufacturer provided a BIOS update that allowed for compatibility. Also that chip is LGA 1155, not 1150

*since that is the oldest chip on that socket, there shouldn't be any problems, really*

Main Rig: R9 5950X @ PBO, RTX 3090, 64 GB DDR4 3666, InWin 101, Full Hardline Watercooling

Server: R7 1700X @ 4.0 GHz, GTX 1080 Ti, 32GB DDR4 3000, Cooler Master NR200P, Full Soft Watercooling

LAN Rig: R5 3600X @ PBO, RTX 2070, 32 GB DDR4 3200, Dan Case A4-SFV V4, 120mm AIO for the CPU

HTPC: i7-7700K @ 4.6 GHz, GTX 1050 Ti, 16 GB DDR4 3200, AliExpress K39, IS-47K Cooler

Router: R3 2200G @ stock, 4GB DDR4 2400, what are cases, stock cooler

I don't have a problem...

Its in the name. All 1150 CPUs can go in 1150 motherboards. It depends which motherboard you get if you want to overclock but the 2400 is a locked chip and its 1155 so it is the wrong socket and it is not meant for overclocking. If you want a motherboard to go with the i5, get an 1155 mobo.

More proof. :P

If it is indeed the i5 2400....then look for a H series chipset with an lga 1155 socket. Check the manufacturers support cpu list to make sure that it is supported on the motherboard.

such as

Asus P8H77-M PRO

Which can be found on ebay

CPU: Ryzen 7 2700x cooled by Pure Rock Slim // RAM: Gskill Flare X 3200mhz CL14 2x16 32GB// GPU: Powercolor Red Devil RX 6650 XT 8GB// Motherboard: ASRock B450m Pro 4 // PSU: Seasonic G550 Gold 80+ // Storage: 4TB pcie nvme game drive, 512 GB m.2 sata3 OS Drive, 4 TB WD Red HDD // Monitor: Samsung S22D300 21.5" 1080p 60Hz, MSI 27" 1080p 144hz Freesync 1ms display // Peripherals:  Logitech fancy shmancy keyboard and moise with rgb and gaminess stuff, very fancy | Kingston HyperX Cloud Core headset

got that bookmarked, thanks

The 1155 socket will be compatible with

B65

H61

Q67

P67 and Z68 chipset

So when looking at the mobo just look at these names at the beginning of it and you should be good. Double check with mobo site anyway to see if i5 2400 supports it but if you picked the right chipset above there is a 99% chance it will work
