GTX 1070 vs GTX1080 (and Ti) vs VEGA

So, I'm in a little bit of a tight spot here. I'm currently in the middle of a full PC upgrade (Just got a Z170 mobo and the i7-6700K) and now i have almost the amount i need for the 1070, and the doubts came rushing in...

I'm planning on a custom loop, CPU(mobo+socket waterblock)+GPU (and backplate), so it's like, another 500€ or more on top of whichever graphics card I choose.

Here's my thought process for each one:

  1. If i get the GTX 1070, immediatly since I have the money, I can start thinking about the watercooling loop, which would be the last thing in my build, BUT in terms of future proofing I don't know if it will hold up as good as a 1080. I mainly play in 1080p-120Hz and I don't think I'll be upgrading to a 1440p monitor anytime soon. I mainly play Overwatch but I have my eye on The release of Star Citizen (Hopefully in this century amirite guise ) and it seems it's gonna be like Crysis 2.0, a hardware nightmare... Also I'm doing computer engineering and in the near future I'll be getting my hands dirty with Unreal Engine and that kind of stuff (Does the GPU make a difference in this kind of stuff though?).
  2. If i get the GTX 1080, then it would be in approx ~1 month from now (and would most likely be the FE for the waterblock it uses, or any other cheap 1080 with good waterblock compatibility cuz the evga ftw incident got me fudged up). This I think will give me the extra oomph I'm scared I might need with the 1070 and futureproof the system (even though this term is basically a myth in terms of PC hardware) for a bit more.
  3. Now VEGA, my biggest nightmare, or my salvation. The announcement of VEGA hyped me buckets and I'm afraid it might smash the GTX 1080's performance to the ground and I might regret buying the 1080 and not waiting for this (even if it's bound to be better, coming out like a year later). No info on prices, no info about z170 chipset being able to squeeze the full performance out of it (I'm not sure because of the 54893425.33 new technologies it implements, it might need a mobo compatible, right?), but 4K ultra 60fps??? That might just last me till the day I die I tell you that much!

Now, it's safe to say that the VEGA is like a wild card, I highly doubt I'd choose it, but if it ends up being a god card among nvidia pleb GPUs I'll be mad as fuck . The fact that I have a 760 and it's not terrible for the time being gives me that wiggle room that at the end of the day is the reason for my doubts and throws me in this hillarious loop of:

*wake up decided*

-I SHOULD GET THE 1070 ooorr... wait 1 month and get DAT 1080 DOE but... BUT... for one more month maybe THE 1080Ti IS OUT  but at this point I should just wait for VEGA RIGHT?

And just when I'm about to get to a conclusion it's night time, I gotta sleep and I wake up right back where I started.

SHOW ME THE WAY TO ACHIEVE DEM FPS AND NOT BE LEFT WITH THE ~~CUDA~~ COULDA/SHOULDA/WOULDAS OF LIFE.

I might as well throw my rig specs, shouldn't I?:

MOBO : ASUS Sabertooth Z170 S
CPU : i7-6700K (not OC'd yet)
RAM : 16GB DDR4 GEIL EVO X (RGB cuz I'm a dummy)
GPU : GTX 760 Windforce somethingsomething
CASE : NZXT S340 white
STORAGE : Only 120GB SSD and 500GB HDD, don't need more

----

TL;DR: 1070vs1080vsVEGA keeping in mind performance, price (how long till I get the money) and time before obsolete.

For 1080p a 1070 would be fine. It can grt most games above 60fps and extreme hardcore games around 60.

Yeah but wouldn't the 1080 give me like, one more year of "futureproofing"?

Besides, in a couple of years I might just go for a 1440p...

Right now the 2 possibilities I'm juggling with are:

  • 1070 and watercool GPU+CPU (just for bragging rights as I was told they dont have huge OC capability)
  • 1080 and watercool CPU only (but still custom) and maybe in a year expand the loop.

And thinking even further ahead, get another 1080 in the future for SLI, who knows...

You can water cool 1080 at a later time. I would get performance over aesthetics any time.

I wouldn't wait for the VEGA, although go for the 1080 or even the 1080ti. If by the time you can purchase the 1080 the 1080ti is around the corner, go for it.

If you really want to wait for Vega it is supposed to be launched somewhere before the end of Q2 but you never know.

That is true, I'm aware of it. That's why I leave it as a bit of a wild card. The option is there, just not very feasable...

If you've got the money now, go for it. Personally I am waiting for Vega since I am not in dire need of a GPU upgrade and have no problem with my setup but don't worry about something releasing in 4-5 months. By then we'll also have info on Volta and it'll just be another "Should I wait" thread.
