Lately Intel has been changing their CPU sockets every other generation. The i5-6500 is sixth generation, and requires a different CPU socket that you don't have.

An i5-4460 would probably do the trick, though. It's slightly older and slightly slower than the 6500, but that isn't saying much these days.

Does anyone know if the i5-4460 would have any issues in that console-ish Alienware system? I didn't realize that's what it was, and I only recommended the 4460 because it's a Haswell alternative to the 6500. Obviously the 4460 will fit the socket, but if they put an i3-4170T in the system before does that indicate any cooling or power limitations of the rest of the system?

Yeah, all that is normal. I'm just worried that maybe the Intel CPU cooler you have is designed for a 35 Watt i3-4170T instead of an 84 Watt i5-4460. I'm kinda hoping someone who knows more about this kind of system than I do will chime in and say it's fine. :P

Here are some others who have discussed the CPU upgrade potential of Alienware Alpha systems:

https://na.alienwarearena.com/ucf/show/224395/boards/general-1/ForumPost/upgrading-your-alienware-alpha-i3-your-options-and-the-reality

http://santini.io/blog/how-to-upgrade-and-improve-the-alienware-alpha

They seem to suggest it's not really worth the cost to upgrade the CPU when the GPU is also quite slow and which can't be upgraded. The amount of performance difference you see will vary—and I think newer games may care more about an i5 than the ones these sources were talking about two years ago—but ultimately I do think your GPU is going to affect your gaming performance far more than a new CPU would. The good news is that they do seem to indicate 84 Watt Haswell CPUs can be used in the system safely, so I guess it's not a compatibility issue.

i want the cpu upgrade more for the fact that id like to have recording on arma 3 rp servers for "go pro" footage for admin sits less for the gaming upgrade i can play games like the newest mirrors edge and all them new ones at 40-60 fps somehow so im happy with the gpu i have for now

According to newegg, it has a 130w psu.  The 860m pulls about 60 watts, which is fine with a 30w cpu, but not so good with an 80 watt cpu with the psu that you have.  I honestly don't think you should risk it, rather wait and save for a couple months and see what low budget options are available from the Zen release.
