Assuming you've got either a 4690k or 4790k with the z97 board, I'd stay for another generation or 2 unless Zen+ or Coffee Lake show insane improvements. What are the rest of your specs? If you are willing to do a $450 upgrade, there might be something else you can do to improve your system

If you wanna upgrade your best bet is probably Z170 and skylake as together they are only like 5% weaker then 270 and kaby, and prices will probably drop as kaby comes out more and more.

No, prices aren't going to drop. Intel is done making Skylake and has historically been very good at keeping a very low inventory around, so they are already probably pretty much sold out on Intel's end and the major sellers are likely in the same place.

Given the minimal uptick in performance, you aren't going to see tons of 6700k's getting dumped onto the used market either, if for no other reason than that pretty much anyone willing to make that upgrade is probably also fine with just keeping their "old hardware" for a secondary system.

As for motherboards, the manufactures dumped z170 hard over Q4 2016 and are all rolling out their z270 boards at pretty much identical price points to where the equivalent z170 was.

If you are going new build then you are a fool to go Skylake over Kaby Lake unless you are getting a significant discount for some reason.
