Would a Samsung 850 Evo 500GB mSATA work on an Asus Z97-A?

The 850 Evo is a normal SATA SSD, so no reason for it to not work. Also, I own the Z97-I (ITX version of your board) from Asus and my 500GB 850 Evo is also working without problems.

 

EDIT: Didn't see it was mSATA, if you haven't bought it yet, buy a regular SATA one.

No, mSATA != m.2

 

Your mobo has an M.2 port, this is nto the same as an mSATA port. Even though both are on the SATA protocol.

This is the M.2 version of the Samsung 850 EVO.

 

The 850 EVO comes in 2.5", mSATA and M.2 form factors. All of them use the SATA connection protocol, so their performance is identical or near-identical. The M.2 version would however not work on your mainboard, as your M.2 slot only supports PCIe-based SSDs!

Here's the current SSD recommendation list from TomsHardware. All of the drives listed there are M.2 PCIe (and NVMe, which your motherboard supports if you have an up-to-date UEFI). Their recommended mainstream SSDs seem to cost about $20-30 more than the M.2 850 EVOs, but their performance is likely to be better than the SATA drives anyway. If anything, you'll save on a lot of cable mess in your system with the M.2 drives!

I'm only going to use it to store games as my 850 Pro 256GB is getting full because I have it partitioned it (Windows on one side and games on the other).

That's where the tidy, cable-free magnificence of M.2 comes into play! I'm waiting to see what Ryzen does, but if the X370 boards are anything like the Z270 boards then I'm really looking forward to a clean double-M.2 system free of SATA data and power cables.

 

Of course, it's up to you wether or not that's worth the premium. Me, I'm sold =)
