How to keep system safe while overclocking?

I don't know how to over clock. If I accidentally type in an extra zero will the system just try till it just catches fire? Will I explode? Can I ever run Crysis?

So now that we have that out of the way, is a hyper 212 evo in push/pull good enough for average overclocks with a 6600k and keep it at around 60c under load?
