So I'm looking at making a server cluster for my home server. Looking at buying a hp d2700 jbod for storage so 2 of my servers has access to the same files. In the cluster I'll have everything running shoes on hyperv vms. I'm looking at buying hp p812 controllers for my servers so they can connect to the 2700. I have been told I need it to have a pass through mode? Would this hardware work for what I'm trying to do? Thanks guys

CPU: I7-6700k @ 4.7ghz Memery: 16GB HyperX DDR4 GPU: GTX TITAN X OC MotherBoard: Gigabyte Z170A Gaming 6 SSD: 1-Kingston 120Gb    1-PNY 240GB HDD: 1-WD 1T, 1-Seagate 750GB CPU COOLER: Corsair H100i GTX PSU: Corsair HX850 Case: Corsair 760T White Edition

jbod storage sounds like DAS, you are looking for a NAS

DAS is supposed to be attached to a single server, though there might be some that can handle two

Not really a nas. Just redundant storage for my servers. So a server can have a crash and the other server has access to the same files.

You want multible PCs access the same storage, you want a network based share, a JBOD system like the 2700 is considered DAS -->

Direct-attached storage (DAS) is digital storage directly attached to the computer accessing it, as opposed to storage accessed over a computer network. Examples of DAS include hard drives, solid-state drives, optical disc drives, and storage on external drives. The name "DAS" is a retronym to contrast with storage area network (SAN) and network-attached storage (NAS).

if you have only two servers you might consider using their own storage and then sync it, both have the same data and no additional hardware needed

-snip-

Using Windows Clustering Services you can have two systems sharing the same storage LUN or JBOD. Only one system has active control at a time but if one fails the other will take over.

Windows even supports Cluster Shared Volumes which for Hyper-V means both systems can read/write to the same LUN.
