asus strix 1070 4 pin fan connectors not working?

James Wakeland

hey i have 2 4 pin fan connectors on my asus strix 1070 and i tried plugging in a couple different 3 pin fans but nothing happens. so does it haaave to be 4 pin fans? or are these pins turned off somewhere in the settings? i doont see anything in the asus software settings to turn them on.

They should spin up automatically when the gpu heats up. Open a game or something that stresses your gpu and see if the fans spin.
I don't know if they need to be 4-pin. 3-pin fans should also spin, they might not have speed control though.

I have a 1070 Strix, so I can give a cursory overview of the two fan headers on the card.

When you first run GPU Tweak II, any fans connected to the card are momentarily pulsed. The good news first: they're controllable independently from the three main fans, but not independently from each other, i.e. you should choose similar fans because you only have one percentage slider for both fan headers. Both 4-pin PWM and 3-pin fans work, although I'm not sure whether the card has real PWM control or just voltage control.

3-pin fans work. Try rebooting with the fans plugged in, they should spin a little bit. If they dont, then something is wrong.

still nothing. set fans to turn on at 10c and its still not coming on. ill try taking a 4 pin cpu fan off of an old heatsink and try that later

Do you have the GPU Tweak II software running in the background? If not, the fans won't move. Took me a while to figure out I had to have their very mediocre software running at all times. Very irritating.

I just tried it  with my card. In auto mode the external fans start spinning at 60C. Make sure your fan is plugged in correctly and run a stress test.
