SPECS:

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 Gaming Edition

CPU: Intel i5 6600k

RAM: 16 GB 2400 Ballistix

STORAGE: 2TB HDD

MOBO: ASUS Z170-A

 

So Ive been able to reach a stable 4.2 overclock but, the core speed constanly stays at 4200mhz! Even when im just on my desktop. Is there any way to make the clock speed drop lower when not gaming, or doing nothing etc? Because I really need help with this. I set the multiplier to 42 in bios, and cpu voltage to 1.250. The core speed stays at 4200 always. Please someone help me fix this.

well first make sure that your processor power management is properly set in windows to allow your processor to clock down when idle.  If it is an its not allowing you still theres likely some power saving features disable in the bios you need to re-enable.

Oh, Is it because i set power options in windows to maximum performance? If so ill change that very quick.

Could be, in advanced setting in power management there should be min & max processor states. Mine min got set to 100% some how which made mine do the same so I reduced it to 25% and it fixed it for me.

Your "minimum CPU Power Management settings is set to 100 %, which means it will run at the clock speed set from bios 100 % of the time. You kan keep your power option to high performance, no need to switch, but you can also edit the "high performance" plan setting. If you set it at 99 % for example, if you are not doing ANYTHING, CPU will downclock itself to stock speeds, and boosts up to 4,2 instantly as you are doing something CPU-related, even opening Google Chrome will put the CPU to ur overclock just for a sec to open Chrome (after Chrome is opened, it will downclock itself again). If you let's say edit the minimum CPU Power Management to 50 %, it will clock itself down, and won't boost untill you really push the CPU with rendering/games. Just test it our yourself, edit the minimum CPU Power Management to your own liking ;)
