Main Question: Should I purchase an i5-6600k, or an i7-6700k as an upgrade?   I am currently using an MSI Z170 SLI Plus with an i3-6100.

Let's assume that I already have any and all prerequisites. I do mostly gaming. Very seldom I will do some photo and audio editing, which isn't really demanding.

Most of my gaming would be Bioshock Infinite, Garry's Mod, Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto V, Portal, Slime Rancher, and some other not extremely demanding games.

Also, I hope at least one other person enjoys that I put the games in alphabetical order.

The best upgrade path would be the 6700K, as it means that you will only need to upgrade again later rather than sooner (4 thread CPU are on their way out).

Depends if you have all the money sure get a i7 6700k but I might reccomend the i7 6700 because if you have a i3 6100 I doubt you have a z170 board and therefore there is no point in getting a k cpu because you cannot oc

He has a msi z170 sli plus motherboard so he is able to overclock.

Sorry about that, I didn't really take notice of you name when I replied.

It's completely fine. I really want to upgrade, so I might just get the 6600k unless I find a good deal on a 6700k. The other day there was a seller with 6700k processors for 30 USD. I missed it though.

Was it a used CPU because a 6700k for 30 USD is crazy. In Sydney, a 6700k costs 344 USD which is 479 AUD. Also, I liked the fact that you put the games in alphabetic order.

even with names.. sometimes it gets insanely difficult :P

i usually take to defaulting to male unless there's specific reasons to think otherwise, because i found the people that get seriously offended by that strategy are those "DID YOU JUST ASSUME MY GENDER?" people.

on topic;

the 6600k is plenty, i'd only suggest going 6700k if that money isnt better spent elsewhere (or if there's more money you have to spend elsewhere)

I am glad you enjoyed that. It was a certified Intel distributor known as Antonline and they were new unopened.

That's still far cheaper than what my i7 4790K cost ($540 AUD, and it was cheaper than any other 4790K and 6700K at the time), and its worth every cent over my i5 4440 (which even when I eventually got it to 3.6GHz via BCLK overclocking was limiting games and programs).

My first gmaing PC was an Alienware X51 R2 with an i5-4440 and it honestly isn't really better than my current i3-6100 build. I am using the old GTX 645 card that was in it.

My i7 6900k cost me $1488 AUD, the 6950x was just out of the question.

i really like going "it" because of how badly it pisses off the "did you just assume my gender? "people :D

it's however not really a very good strategy if you intend on making friends xD

Some of my friends call me "it" as a joke. I'm cool with that. I can be an it.

What do you use your PC for? Do you really need a 6900k?

I work in a studio and we just sold the mac pro so I was in charge of building us computers so my video editing PC has a 6900k and a GTX 1080 and the other computer in our studio has a 6800k with a GTX 1070, the parts are going to be arriving very shortly.

Due to the i3 6100's significantly higher clock speed, you'll find that multi-threaded its faster than the i5 4440, since they run at 3.1GHz across all 4 cores and only at 3.3GHz single core. The i5 4440 TBH isn't bad for a low end CPU if you only used crappy Core Duo until you bought it....
