Second hand CPU's

I can get an i7 4930k for a third of the price if I buy it second hand. I already have a motherboard and RAM that supports this CPU, so would you recommend I buy that CPU second hand, or just wait and buy an entirely new system later on?

It all depends on if you're willing to take the risk. There's no guarantee that it will work, but there is a pretty high chance it will.

There isn't a huge risk if you're able to test it out before buying it -- if you can buy it with paypal and then stress test it for a few hours and it's fine, then it's more than likely fine. And if it fails the stress test, then you can contact the seller and get a refund (and if they refuse to cooperate, then get Paypal involved).

i would not recommend a 4930k at all. most of them dont overclock well at all. 3930K are normally much cheaper and overclock way higher.

hmm thats a 2011 socket cpu right? those boards are expensive , look at total system cost and see if its worth it

Except you lose PCIE 3 when you do that. With PCIE NVMe drives I would much rather have a 4930k.

x79 doesnt support them as boot drives anyway most of the time. at that point you are much safer going with x99. also pcie 2.0 would not slow an nvme drive down. i would rather have a cpu that was 1/2 the price running 4.6ghz than a cpu running 4.2ghz that cost more with an expensive ssd

i dont think you will see a massive difference in 1/2seconds in boot time vs much higher cpu oc. even changing the ram timings can make more difference at this point.

4930k's can do 4.4 all day so I really don't see the big deal about a 200mhz overclock difference. I would much rather have the extra bandwidth for my express cards than the 200mhz.

If you can return it in case of DOA, it seems like a good idea. CPU's aren't prone to dying anytime soon if they're working in the first place.

depends on the cpu, some can do 4.8ghz, but they are still nearly double the price.

thats really cheap actually, they are normally 300ish. i would go for it.
