Okay, before we kick things off, here are my specs.
Intel Core i7‑4790 3.6 GHz Quad‑Core
8GB DDR3 RAM
MSI Z97 GAMING 5 ATX Motherboard ‑ LGA1150 Socket
850w power supply
GTX 1070 Founders edition

I wanted to do an upgrade on my PC becuase i have 400 dollars. i was thinking about upgrading to an

Intel Core i7-6700K Skylake Quad-Core 4.0 GHz

Gigabyte LGA1151 Intel Z170 ATX DDR4 Motherboards GA-Z170X-UD5

Mushkin Enhanced Redline 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000) Memory (Desktop Memory) Model MRB4U300JJJM8GX2

Is this a good build?

i wouldn't bother with the cpu+mobo, the 4790 and 6700k have very little difference in performance. just get the extra 8gb of ram and save the money for something else.

From what I have learned, it is about a 7%-15% difference in performance (including fudge factor and your luckyness, or lack of, in getting good OCing parts).

I personally do not think it is worth it. However, if you feel it is worth it then I think you should be ok. Also, be willing to spend a little extra on a MB, you never know what feature or extra port you might need.

 

Also, I am interested in your cpu and MB in your existing build, pm me if you do get a z170 build going.

Instructions for frustration management:  

1) Sit at desk.   2) Repeatedly slam forehead against desk.
