Today I recieved the Antlion ModMic 4, as I have been needing a microphone solution to use with my HD 598's. Went to plug in the mic to test it and got no sound from it, so I did a little research about my laptop to find it has a line level input. So now I'm scrambling around to find solutions to my new problem.

Would any of the following setups fix my audio input issue?

Schiit Fulla 2?

  • Would I be able to plug in my headphones into the 1/4" output and my ModMic elsewhere into the amp/DAC?

ModMic Y splitter or ModMic USB adapter?

  • I would assume either of these would work on the cheap. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Any cheap Y splitter from Amazon?

  • Again same as previous

The laptop is a Macbook Pro 5,2 running bootcamp.

Sorry if I'm already answering my own question with my choices, still don't fully understand line-level vs. mic-level, how each of the inputs/outputs of external audio equipment work, etc.

the fulla 2 is headphones only. A USB sound card should work for you. I still don't see how your MacBook doesn't work with your mic, you just plug it in and the go into record device settings and choose the mic.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Feel free to pm me if you have a question for me or quote me. If you want to hear what I have to say about something just tag me.

Quoted directly from Antlion's FAQ:

"Macs, for whatever reason still unknown to the world, do not supply the 5v of phantom power needed. This can be fixed with a simple USB adapter."

Don't understand why this is, I just know the mic does not work by being directly plugged into the mic input. Maybe I should have stated that I am looking for an amp/dac for the future that would both power the mic and my headphones.

All microphones need some power to run, and in all other situations you normally get a few volts of power from a microphone jack.

Basically, with mac, you must use the USB adapter. The one antlion sells works great, otherwise there is a Sabrent one on amazon everyone uses.
