keep a look out for OLED monitors in CES 2017... the main issue with OLED monitors though is image retention and burn-in. the latter isn't really a issue unless you're a long-term OLED owner but it can happen.

AMOLEDs are more efficient (on paper) than OLEDs.

The Alienware 13 laptop uses an OLED panel, but it's the only one so far. OLED or AMOLED monitors should be coming soon.

OLED = Organic Light Emitting Diode

AMOLED = Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode

OLED panels are either AMOLED or PMOLED (Passive Matrix OLED)

Essentially, both use the same lighting methods and general technology. The difference is that AMOLED displays uses a TFT to power the LEDs, reducing the voltage required from the CPU/controller, as well as allowing for larger displays due to a storage capacitor actively maintaining a pixel's state. Passive OLED displays require the pixels to hold their state passively, limiting the size of the display.

The vast majority of modern OLED displays are AMOLED, especially if they're decently sized (Passive Matrix OLED is generally limited to around 3" in devices as far as I can find)

We'll probably see AMOLED monitors at CES 2017

EDIT: It seems like some companies have taken to calling their displays AMOLED now. It's kind of causing confusion, or being used as a marketing statistic because people think it's something different. Basically, if it's not on a really small device like an MP3 player, it's most likely going to be AMOLED.

Well, the Alienware 13 is still AMOLED. PMOLED is just way too inefficient for a display of that size.
