Hello,

I just reinstalled windows 10 on my SSD installed all the programs and drivers what i need and then noticed something strange.

My harddrive is constantly at 100% and it has 0kbps write/read speed, this happens when i try to download a game from steam or try to but a file on the drive or remove a file.

When i close down steam or other programs it remains at 100% it also crashes my explorer and for it to go back down i need to restart my computer.

I looked online but did not find any solutions.

The drive worked perfectly before i resetted windows 10 (i did not format that drive or touch it in any way)

Can anyone help me ?

thank you!

Happy hollidays

Its about a year old and its a WD 1TB, ive attached a screenshot of what task manager tells me, i just noticed this only happens whenever i try doing a big file transfer (speeds go really low) and when i try to allocate existing files of arma 3 (wich is already installed on that drive) the read/write speed goes up in an instance stays at 100% then instantly drops down to 0 and the drive is used 100%, stopping steam or something else doesnt change the usage

Have you tried formatting the HDD?

About 100GB free storage, around 800GB of games

Shit! So formatting is not an option, unless you want to spend three days straight downloading all of that back. Has the drive been exposed to magnetism, the elements or has been in a drop? Maybe try disabling the drive in Device Manager and then enabling it. Do this only if your SSD is the one with windows. To be clear in the HDD you only store games right?

On the harddrive i have steam installed along with all the games and a backup of my documents (wich i need thats like 130GB) i cant copy over the documents to another drive because once the speeds hit the max in that bottom graph they drop instantly down to 0.

If i can get those files over on another drive i could try formatting i have games installed i don't play anymore anyway but i need those documents off that drive

One last thing try defragmenting your HDD with "Defragment and Optimize Drives" a program that comes with windows (THIS WILL NOT DELETE YOUR DATA) but it will take a while 1-2 hours. If that doesn't work you may need to contact a professional so he can retrieve the data.

Yes It does since your HDD is assigned a task which is shutdown. Since your HDD doesn't work properly or takes to long to perform task the computer doesn't shutdown. I'm sorry M8 but i'm out of ideas you may have to take it to the repair shop or something.

Thank you for the replies though, i tried giving defragmantation another go but once it hit 60mbps the speeds go back down to 0 so i can't even defrag it anymore

There is a way. If you go ahead and type "Reset this PC" in windows search bar then press "Reset this PC" you will be given two options Select files that you want to keep or delete everything. I'm not sure if that will work since your HDD cant perform any tasks (Dangerous option since if the HDD can't write i will probably not be able to delete so you will be stuck reseting the computer.). What I really recommend is contacting an expert to extract the data and then get a new HDD. Preferably the Seagate 1tb ST1000DM003 since it is one of the fastest 1tb HDDs on the market.

Hello, i found a way to get all the documents on another drive, its a little time consuming but it works. i went ahead and copied every single file one per one to the other drive, its working for now, after that i will format the drive and hope that the issue is fixed if not i'll come back to this post and perhaps find a fix for it that way :) thanks for your replies happy holidays to you!

Hello,

After a successfull document recovery i have formatted the drive, went ahead and installed steam on it an i am currently downloading ArmA 3 without any more drive problems.

Looks like it's fixed, thanks for helping me make space on this drive again and help me fix the problem :) merry xmas
