Hi,

so my friend's pc is having a wierd shutdown problem. The pc randomly shuts down, as if someone has hit the shutdown button (windows turns off properly). It does this while he is gaming so we've concluded that it happens when the pc is under load. It's really inconsistent - sometimes it happens once a day, while today it happened 2 times in 20 minutes. It also doesn't matter how intense the load is (we've tested in Crysis 3 and Overwatch and it's still random). I've checked and it's not an overheating issue. We reinstalled windows 2 times (the second time we wiped the entire drive), so i think that rules out malware and viruses. In windows' event log there is an event that says windows initiated a shutdown, reason - Power button or lid. We tried unplugging the power button from the motherboard and that didn't work. Today i was really puzzled because as we're playing Crysis 3 the system starts the shutdown proccess and that "These programs are preventing windows from shuting down" screen comes up because of origin, so i clicked cancel and the pc continued working normally. WTF???

His spec:

CPU: Intel core i5 4460

GPU: Asus Strix GTX 960

PSU: Seasonic SSR 430ST, 430W, 80+ bronze

Motherboard: AsRock H81M-DSG  R2.0

Any help is appreciated!

It could be that the psu is not powerful enough.

No. The computer would shut off instantly.

Most likely a failing power supply.

Typical when you experience complete shutdown under load.

Thats what we think the problem is. But the issue is hard to reproduce (because it's so random), so i don't know what will happen if we try to make use of the warranty.

It would be better to source/borrow another power supply so that you can verify whether or not the PSU is the issue.
