Specs:

i5 2500k

16GB ddr3

500GB system drive

Deadish 3tb hdd that needs replacing.

I want a proper NAS hdd this time around, as I use the "server" to stream video over lan. Would love some suggestions from the experienced people of LTT.

Wd red? Seagate ironwolf?

Rpm? Other things I need to know?

I must also admit, I know very little about hdd setup, except for installinh single drives. Raid arrays are not my strong suit, but would love to get some input on this aswell, as I'm thinking raid 1 would be sweet?

Money is no issue as this is a 3 year investment I intend to spend what I consider to be needed. But set an upper price range of 300$?

Id get a few HDD's and run then in raid rather than one big one.

Get something like the wd blue 3tb's or the segate 3tb's for 90 bucks, and run them in raid 1.

A Nas drive won't be any better. All they do is have firmware that times out errors, which won't help unless your using a hardware raid card. They also help with vibrations, but that won't be a issue with only a few drives and shock mounting.

In raid 1, I would not get the performance boost I'm looking for if I use wd blue vs using wd red.

Two wd blue in raid 0 on the other hand would give me the performance boost I'm looking for, but would add a massive point of failure.

Reliability is about the same, and the blues are cheaper and faster. For a non hardware raid a nas drive won't really help you.
