Im building a router and i was wondering what card would be the best for long range

Thats pretty cheap and better than most cards.

a secondhand wifi router with external antennas in acces point mode  is your best bet. pcie wifi cards are sub optimal. this also allows you to bring out the access point to a more central location for optimal placement.

im looking to install pf sense on a vm on my server and have it use an wirless access point but that dosnt seem like a bad idea with a router

Make your router its own unit. Its gonna make that server a pain anytime you want to change anything or it goes down.

Id get anouther server or a standard router

Also as far as i know pfSense only support upto n and is back at it but it might have been update, im not sure.

Do not use pfSense for WiFi.

If you for some reason want to, even though it is a bad idea, here is the wiki page about the supported cards. Read it, read it carefully, and look at the Google docs which lists the chipsets that have been tested and what they support.

 

Your best bet is to get a card with an Atheros chipset.
