No they're different sockets. the i3 is 1150, the 6700k is a 1151.

2 ways to deal with this:

1) Get the 6700k + a Z170 (socket 1151) board and memory (DDR4)

2) Get a 4790k

So for Christmas I am receiving an i7-6700k processor. I am upgrading my pc from an i3-4130. The cpu socket is the same so it should work right? I am not sure and if anyone know can you please let me know. Thanks.

no it is not the same socket. research before you choose something. You need a z170 board or a a h110 or something that supports skylake z170 can overclock.
