Two RX 480s vs one 1070?

Go to solution Solved by Rolfejc,

A single graphics card is almost always a better option than a dual GPU. The 1070 would be a better choice right now.

I'm building a home theater PC that I will do some light gaming on and will use as a server for my security cameras.  Should I get a 1070 or two RX 480s?

Other specs

-6800K

-Asus Z170 PRO GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

-2tb hard drive

-750w PSU

-Windows 10

-Thermaltake Suppressor F51 E-ATX Mid Tower

-64GB of DDR4 Corsair Vengeance RAM

1070 wins. dual 480 might win in raw performance or something like that but for gaming it always loses. also why do you consider a 1070 for "light gaming"? i personally wouldn't even consider an i7 6700k for something like this... i would get a xeon with a server motherboard

You say light gaming, if it's light gaming then do you really need something as powerful as a 1070?

I really don't want to upgrade in the near future, so I'm just getting someone good now so that I won't have to upgrade for a while.  I had that in mind when I picked these parts.

personally this whole build looks wonky to me for the usecase you have in mind, but thats possibly because i just don't understand the situation. the powersuply also is overkill, especially for the usecase...

Personaly, I would start looking for an external/PCI-e soundcard to get better quality sound for your speakers.

I already have one-Creative Sound Blaster X7

I have a 4k TV and I plan to have it connected to my TV.  That's why I picked the case I got-so I won't hear anything over my music/movies/whatever

A single RX 480 would be fine, an I7-6700 would do you pretty much just aswell, even if non overclockable and a 650W power supply is more than enough, might aswell just bring it down to 600W. Also 64GB of ram for video surveillance? Welp, im pretty sure youll be A-Ok with just 16GB tough... unless your gonna play Crysis 3 and have 6 4K Sony cameras around your house...

ah that explains it, but in that case i would definitely say that cpu is overkill, you want this build to be silent and overclocking doesn't really fit in that picture, also keep in mind that 4k streaming will probably be better with upcoming kabylake cpu's since it has newer DRM for netflix and possibly other streaming services. also blueray 4k playback on PC is not yet a thing i THINK. i believe that the 1070 should have the DRM for it but i really am not sure about that...

Should I just take a 4770K I have out of an unused desktop and use that until 6 core Kaby Lake processors are released?

well im not really sure about it to be fair. 4k is a big mess atm on pc from what i know, bad support, no 4k blueray support, weird DRM rules. i would make another thread about this to ask around a little more because i really don't know enough about this to make the right call on it for you :)

If you're not going to upgrade for what you percive to be a very long time, the 480s might not be so bad. If you percive your upgrade time to be short, definitely the 1070. I've ran SLI on every single gaming rig I've had, even my laptop, while I can't say crossfire will be the same, I can say that SLI is rarely bad. Assuming you're doing 1080p, if a game doesn't scale well with your cards, it  probably will do fine with just one anyways. From my experience, I find SLI can be worth it over the long run, but again, I've only used Nvidia cards, and they were always Titan cards (and 580ms once). I'd suggest looking at benchmarks first, so you can see if it's worth it for yourself.

In general, I'd recommend the 1070, but I think dual 480s isn't a bad consideration either.

Totally agree,And I've only ever used crossfire with the same results. However I do see less games getting dual GPU support lately.
