There are a good list of programs that already stay running in the background when closed. Skype and Origin come to mind as that's what I've been doing for a couple of days. As everyone has already mentioned, just minimize them. I understand that that isn't the answer you're looking for, but it's the only thing that makes sense. If you do find some other workaround, congratulations, but your little quest seems in vain. Good luck all the same!

It's one of Mac OS X's best features, I don't see why there isn't a solution to this yet.

I intend to find a way, even if it means touching windows where it doesn't like to be touched.

If I do find the solution, or anyone else before me, it'll be marked as solved, so follow the topic for updates.

No need to fix a sentence that isn't broken.

vain  (vamacr.gifn)

adj. vain·ervain·est
1. Not yielding the desired outcome; fruitless: a vain attempt.
2. Lacking substance or worth: vain talk.
3. Excessively proud of one's appearance or accomplishments; conceited.
4. Archaic Foolish.

All of the above apply to the current situation, including #3. (It seems as though prince is just excited about his obviously excessive amount of RAM :P)

TYL (Today you learned) what vain means  ;).

I have 32 gigs of RAM and I don't really need to close things like web browsers or applications in general.

But I close them anyways since I'm so used to it.

Anyone know of a software or a reg/dll hack that will change the close button to minimize?

OS: Windows 8 Pro

Just use the shake feature.  Grab a window by the top bar, shake, and every other window will minimize.
