I have had a problem with my computer where my second ram stick could cause the computer to go into an infinite boot cycle. So i ordered 2 new sticks of ram. Im just wondering of any problems putting my 3 working sticks in would have and how to install them (in what slots). they are all the exact same type of ram

You'll lose dual channel, but that probably won't be the biggest deal in most use cases. As for what slots you use, it won't matter since it will be single channel anyway.

I have 3x 4GB in my system, and 1 of the sticks is a different speed. It works just fine, just if they're at different speeds they'll default to the slower speed. Which isn't a big deal anyway.

So would it be better to just use 8GB dual channel? or 12GB single channel?

If you need more than 8gb, then 12gb single channel. If 8gb is enough, then 8gb dual channel (although dual channel vs. single channel won't make a difference in a lot of games/scenarios -- although it does in some).
