My dad's job basically involves typing documents and replying to emails and such, and his current computer is getting really old.  If he had asked me to build him a gaming computer, no problem, but I don't know anything about building what he needs.  I put together something on PCPP (below) based on similar builds I saw on there.  Should I make any changes?  Note: I plan to use the hard drive in his current build, and he already has peripherals.

looks fine for his needs but if you have the budget i would add an ssd as boot disk it would make it a lot faster

I'll ask if that's something he wants.  I think he was looking to spend no more than $400 so that could fit into his budget

yeah looks good. 2 recommendations

1. get 1x 8GB RAM stick. this allows him to upgrade to 16GB easily in the future if he needs it (keeps a lot of chrome tabs open say)

2. get a Corsair CX450M Power supply. Its a higher wattage, semi-modular, and most importantly, a trusted and reliable PSU. its only a couple of bucks more.

He doesn't really need a 450 PSU though

1. semi-modular

2. its the same price

3. It allows for upgrading in the future

4. its more reliable / trusted than the one listed

5. @herman mcpootis help me out here

I mean I'm not committed to the PSU I put in the original parts list

I'm only wondering if there is a PSU with less wattage that is more reliable

I'm not saying that what you've suggested in unreasonable

he doesn't need the 450w psu, but if he wants to upgrade to something like an rx 480 for future gaming it will help to have the extra wattage. also, that psu is modular, i don't remember too many 300w psus having that feature.

The modular feature would be nice since I'll be working in a small case

He definitely isn't a gamer though, he won't be gaming but upgrades will almost certainly happen

Hang on

I didn't realize this case could take a ATX PSU and I'm going to have a Corsair CX600M lying around after upgrading my own build (http://www.corsair.com/en-us/cx-series-cx600m-modular-atx-power-supply-600-watt-80-plus-bronze-certified-modular-psu)

Talk about overkill, but I don't see why that won't work

reuse it than, its more than good enough for a i3 without a gpu.
