New GPU

Go to solution Solved by jscho,

Welcome to the forum! Enjoy your stay :)

If you want raw performance, go the 290X, but wait for some non-reference coolers to start popping up. The 780's major price drop surprised me so much and that ACX cooler will keep the card much cooler than the 290X, meaning you can OC and possibly drive it further than the 290X.

I guess at this point it's entirely up to you. If I were in your shoes and wanted a new card fairly soon, I'd go that EVGA 780.

Just my thoughts :)

Hey guys, I've been following Linus for a few years now on youtube and just finally decided to post on the forum as I need some help. Currently I'm sitting on PC with a 3570k in it, 16gb ram, 240gb ssd etc. I've had a 5850 for a good long while and only about a year ago upgraded to a 7950, although it is a great card I am looking to upgrade yet again as in the near future I will be looking to move from my 1080p display to something like a 2560x1440. I waited to see what the 290x was going to be like and was impressed but after seeing the kind of temps the thing got with the ref cooler I decided to stay away from it for now. With the recent nVidia price drops I am now seriously considering picking up a GTX 780 (this exact one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130918). Issue I have is that I live in Arizona and it tends to get extremely hot around here, so I dont need to have my cave heated even more by my PC. Is the 780 worth picking up with its price drop over the 290x with temps being an issue, or do you guys believe that those will be controled by perhpaps some after market coolers. I also do realize that with GPU boost the 780 will try to run as hot as possible to get max performance, I'd also like that taken into consideration, thanks in advance guys.

You could just get a second 7950 for cheap.

Hi,

As I heard R9 290x can handle games better on 1440p resolution & you can wait when versions with aftermarket coolers are coming & about GTX 780. That is great card for that price. I myself plan to buy exactly that version. Seems good with 2 coolers & looks very sexy.

The temps are not an issue or they wouldn't sell them some cards have been known to run at 100 degrees before, but If I was you I would wait for the non reference 290X. The MSI TwinFrozr and Gigabyte Windforce ones have about the best cooling out there, so I would get one of those. Also, all reference cards are made for functionality not the coolest temps so don't let reference designs discourage you.

most definetly the temps are an issue right now. The R9 290x with that reference cooler throttles itself when running to hot ;)

You can either get another 7950, or get a 780 Ti/290X for a significant performance boost.

Look at getting another 7950 OR if you want to keep it  as only one card maybe consider a 7990? Similar power of 2x 7970's but the convenience of one card.

Thanks for all the answers guys, I thought about getting another HD7950 but ever since the nVidia 7950gx2 (i think that was the name) I've always kept with a single GPU, something I always agreed with linus on, rather one good gpu than 2 ok ones. So I'd try to stick to a single card right now, the non ref 290xs will most likely carry another $50+ price premium compared to the 530$ GTX 780 with that ACX cooler. And the reason I mentioned temps is not about the treshold the cards can run at but more about how much hot air is coming out of my case especially during the summer time. I'm seriously leaning toward the GTX 780 right now , but maybe before I hit that buy button linus will get his watercooled review of the 290x =/ .

EDIT: Alright so after taking some time and seeing GTX 780 prices dropping I am wondering what you guys think of the Gigabyte Windforce GTX 780 ? This exact one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125471 its on par with the price of the aformentioned EVGA card but the cooler seems a bit better, though it has crappy reviews on newgg anyone have any thoughts about the two? Even personal preference, there is too much choice and its getting harder for me to click buy one one of them.

Mine hasn't throttled once? But I've got good airflow, something open air test benches don't have.

Context, the only thing the ref cooler is bad for is noise, but I still havent had the fan ramp up past 55% with the limit set to 100% its never needed to, even with my OC.
