one of my friends has a semi pre built system, it has a i5 3350p, 8gb of ram and he upgraded the videocard a few years ago to a XFX 77000. he is thinking of either upgrading or building a completely new system, because his current system has a few problems, for example his cpu cooler rattles and makes a lot of noise under load and his power supply has no name which is kinda worrying. what should he do? upgrade or build a new system, maybe wait for zen and kabylake? if he should upgrade what specific part?

@Alexzz_, what is your friend's budget and in what currency? That'll help in deciding what to do. :)

Unless theres something youd want to scrap from there (i certainly would NOT at all), i think starting from scratch is a good idea... All the parts you named are either useless for todays standards or simply at high risk of failure at this point, the ones with problems at least..

he doesn't have a specific budget or anything, he will save up to buy the parts if needed, right now it plays most games just fine except for just cause 3 which causes a lot of lag.

he was thinking about upgrading the gpu first and then saving up for the rest of the parts, would that be a good idea?

In that case, I'd suggest starting from scratch and build a new PC. What is his currency? :)

Didnt you just mention a power supply that is brandless and nameless? I say no, if that PSU dies, the GPU may very well die with it. Its a huge risk i wouldnt be willing to take, low budget or not. Also unless his fans and computer are generally cleaned, it can get quite comfty and warm in there.

we just cleaned it together a few days ago, so dust isnt that big of a problem anymore. i agree on the power supply however.

@Alexzz_ This looks like a solid build, but I'd just change to motherboard to this instead

 https://de.pcpartpicker.com/product/Q9Gj4D/asus-motherboard-z170a

Or any other white board really. The only reason I don't recommend that MSI krait gaming is that the SATA connectors on the board are perpendicular to the board and the cable management looks quite stupid IMO in a windowed case like S340

CPU: i5 6600k @4.5GHz | GPU Zotac Amp! 1070 | RAM: Corsair vengeance 16gb | Storage: Corsair Force LE 240gb +480gb | Case: Corsair Carbide Clear C400 | PSU: Corsair RM650x | Cooler: H110i GTX

@Alexzz_ It is all down to personal preference. If your friend likes his cables nice and tidy, then go with the ASUS motherboard @Constant Failure recommends. If he prefers more USB ports and doesn't mind an inch of extra cable sticking out, then the MSI Krait I chose would suffice. :)

Ok, who is the maker of the prebuilt? Not all prebuilt PSUs are trash. Actually would help if you could get a product page for it. Also, I don't think he needs a 1311 Euro build. The build above is nice for 100Hz 1440p gaming which those monitors aren't cheap. Would be beneficial to make the GPU a R9 Fury since they are around the price of 480s/1060s but offer more power.

Trash SSD, the Barracuda HDD is extremely loud, bad cooler. Also unless the OPs friend plans on 100Hz 1440p gaming(the i5 can't keep up with a 1070 in 144Hz gaming at 1080/1440p), the 1070 is extremely overkill so a R9 Fury would make more sense.

The SSD, yes, the HDD, 3 of them. I don't need to use an SSD to know the random I/O of it is nearly half that of an 850 Evo

SSDs are generally insane fast compared to HDDs and if OP really wants to hit even more insane speeds, then he'll have to pay a premium for that. By the way, why is the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro rev.2 a bad cooler?

Compared to stock cooler it isn't "bad" but compared to your typica 212 Evo, BeQuiet! PURE ROCK and low end Cryorig coolers it is bad.

And no, the SSD is trash compared to even SSDs in its price bracket. The thing has horrible random I/O and compares to my HDD. Yes WD Blues are much better.

I'd actually wanted to go with the Cryorig C7 though but not sure why I went with the Arctic Freezer 7. :(

Will the ADATA Premier SP550 fair better?

Will the WD Blue perform better than the original Seagate one even though it is just a 5400 RPM drive? By the way, the Seagate Barracude series has 2 different models; ST2000DM001, the one I originally chose, and ST2000DM006, which is the other model. Do they differ in any way? If the WD Blue doesn't outperform the Seagate Barracuda, would a Hitachi Ultrastar 7K3000 be the best of the 3? So many questions! :P
