I finally put the computer i've been working on building for the last 5 months together and when i get to the windows install i get an error message "A required CD/DVD driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.

Note: if the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step.'

I get this same message regardless of if I use the OEM CD in an external optical drive or a USB boot drive made from it in any usb port on the computer.

Solution, install Windows 10 and use the Windows 7 key to activate it.

Edit: Oh right, the free upgrade is over. Ignore that.

Is the disc scratched or damaged in any way?

Do you have the bios boot priority set to the DVD drive?

If all fails you can download another disc from the internet (or use a friends) as long as it's the same version (home, ultimate, pro) and use your own key.

It's not a race to the bottom.

wouldnt that leave me with windows 10 os?

Yes, but then I just remembered that you cannot get Windows 10 for free anymore, so unless you had already activated it using that key, it wouldn't work anyway.

Where did you get your Windows 7 ISO?

http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/windows-7-sp1-32-bit-64-bit-24in1-iso-nov-2016-free-download/

This is an "untouched" all-in-one type of ISO, just select your language and OS version to install it (be sure to select the right version, you can't activate Win7 Pro with a Home key for example)

Just click the download button at the bottom of the page, follow the on-screen instructions and wait a little before the download starts.

Once you have the ISO, use the USB/DVD tools that microsoft says gives out
http://wudt.codeplex.com

(the page can take a bit to load, give it time)

This error is normally caused by a missing driver which in this case will be the SATA driver, but there doesn't seem to be a specific driver for that phase doesn't seem to be listed on the ASUS site so the first port of call should be to download the standard SATA drivers, extract them and see if pointing towards the folder (if it's originally in a zip file) gets you beyond that error.
