Due to the fact you are getting random freezes and crashes, along with the anti-surge warnings i would suggest it probably is a power supply problem. What PSU is it and is it still in warranty? Either way you will be looking to get a new PSU.

AX760 is too much. I would get a SeaSonic G Series SSR-550RM 550W because this has 80 plus Gold Certification and this manufacturer makes very good power supplies.

Good choice on your decision to purchase a Corsair 760, I recently bought the 860i and I have no complaints. Well not quite true the Corsair link software didn't recognize the PSU at first had to try a few different USB headers on the motherboard before I found one that worked.

With regard to your question as to why you where having problems with you 550w PSU, it sounds like you were maxing out the capabilities of that particular PSU. Even though during regular use the PSU was most likely fine, but under stress or full load, momentary spikes most likely exceeded the ability of your PSU. With the purchase of the 760 you will have more than enough power for your current rig, but if I could make one small recommendation if you can afford it opt for the 860i a little more power for any future upgrades.
