$6-700 build (without peripherals/OS) using existing GTX980

nickgore0625

So I want to build my girlfriend a computer for Christmas using an existing gtx 980 that I have from my old workstation. My only experience building a PC was for my current workstation and that was more an exercise in what's the best I can get without going crazy, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'd really only like to spend between 6 or 7 hundred dollars but there's a bit of wiggle room on top of that if need be.

She'll be gaming at 1080/1440, (she plays TF2 which is a pretty light game, but we're also going to play Battlefield 1 together) and then she'll be doing heavy photo editing in Capture One Pro and Photoshop.

I'm new to this whole thing so if you need any more information I'll be happy to supply it.

Thanks ahead of time!

Nick

No problem! Building should be the same as the first time you did it, save for the part where you overclock the i5.

I would've liked a 6600k since they're pretty cheap (I got one for black friday for about $200) but the 6500 is still fine for this type of build.

Cooler price was dumb so I manually put $30, still a great performing/looking cooler.

Basic mobo, you don't need Z170 or anything fancy

8GB RAM should be sufficient but feel free to go for 2x8GB as well

Small SSD + Large HDD seems like a suitable combo for this case (good looking SSD as well to show off)

S340 is a great case that will show off the parts well. Feel free to change to either white, red/black or red/blue depending on your look you want.

Basic but high quality all-black PSU to give a clean cable look

Some sleeved extensions and an LED strip would give a nice flair as well depending on how much you care about your visuals.

16GB are nice but you don't need them for gaming. I downgraded that to fit a HDD instead of anything else (the case you could argue doesn't affect performance, but it does affect looks and ease of use of the computer).
