Raspberry Pi bar-top acrade

So me and a buddy want to build a couple Raspberry Pi'd powered bar-topped arcade cabinets. We're currently looking up prices for old 17-19in monitors, buttons, joysticks etc. The problem is that most tutorials and build guides online recommend the ipac2 for the button mapping and the joystic. It's quite expensive, and not locally available (I live in Greece, and I don't want to spend 40+ shipping off ebay). Does anyone know any other controllers that will do the same job, cost less, or be easier to find locally?

You could always just use the GPIO's integrated in the pi, as long as you are willing to mess with code and interrupts. Otherwise you could also sacrifice some of the retro feel and use an xbox 360 or PS3 controller, I believe they have native support in Retro-Pi along with some other more classic controllers through the GPIOs.

No I want the classic feel of a joystick, and buttons, and I don't really want to use the GPIO on the Pi. I was wondering if you know any other usb controllers like the ipac2, but not the ipac2 (makes sense?).

Well I'm afraid you are a bit out of luck, since the ipac2 controller was specifically designed to work in conjunction with retro pi.

I found this controller:

http://grobotronics.com/zero-delay-arcade-usb-encoder-and-usb-cable.html

But it's only for a single player style cabinet. Do you know it it's possible to have 2 of these (one for each player's joystick and set of buttons), and connect both to the Pi?
