I was thinking about buying a surface pro 3. As a 2nd computer for on the go. I really hate windows to my core other then for gaming. I just haven't touch windows in like 2-3 years.other then for business. I wondering if I can use everything even the touch screen and volume rockers.

On Ubuntu, you need to install this

sudo apt-get install linux-surface

ubuntu being based on Debian so it should be fine

seemingly so. The command does install an unofficial kernel, isn't that hard to install windows again it is all goes tits up.

for the price you can get a dell or lenovo

Yeah but for the specs. the surface pro 3 can offer a high powered machine that will not give me issues ! I mean if they had a i3 version. I would get that but i5 fine.

surface pro is good hardware and traditionally MS hardware has ironically been easier to install alternative OS on. I think thats due to IBM and Intel investment in linux. Debian does have a hardware compatibility list, however the challenge is finding someone who has the surface pro who can confirm what that hardware is; you won't get this from marketing material. I mention Dell and Lenovo because they do ship linux natively. There is also system76 which is what I would own if it wasn't for my countries GST/consumption taxes making it unaffordable. https://system76.com/laptops

It should work, I do remember that Wendell installed Ubuntu on it so it should be doable. It has a link to a blog with more info on it http://blog.davidelner.com/dual-booting-ubuntu-14-10-on-the-surface-pro-3/ What should be noted is that using linux with a touchscreen is lackluster at best. If you plan on using it as a laptop with touching it for simple left clicks or drag and drop that works fine, but I wasn't able to go farther than that. Not because it doesn't detect it, but as how everything is not designed to use it. Only GNOME has a really basic OSK, no good way to recognize long presses as right clicks, scaling issues (as there was not too many options for scaling asides using a ridiculous resolution) and probably more things that I didn't seen before I gave up. Linux desktop is simply not there yet for touchscreen.
