CPU usage question

My computer is newly built and seems to be running fine but my CPU usage jumps around alot but is usually in the 5% to 8% range but jumps from up to 30% for no apparent reason and wanted to know if this is norming its most noticable for a few minutes after start up

Sounds pretty normal to me. During startup your CPU usage will increase since all services and programs have to be started.

ok thanks, i wasnt sure if this was normal or not, its the first PC I built so I guess I am being over paranoid about everything

It is normal even during long idle periods to see some brief spikes in usage as background processes and services update.

I get where you're coming from, but don't get so paranoid. Don't try and diagnose a problem that you haven't identified. (Like lower fps in games than expected, random freezes etc. Usage is never a problem. High usage CAN be a symptom OF a problem. But not a problem in and of itself.) My advice to you, do a temp check under load then close all monitoring software until you notice a problem.  Otherwise you'll just drive yourself crazy.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

It does not matter what cpu you have.... or how powerful... there are always spikes. just little backround processes and stuff. I have a 6 core 12 thread and i can get spikes to.... 99 % of the time at idle im 2% but it can spike to 12. The worst thing you can do is look for problems that are not there. If it was steady or if it caused lacking performance then i would say there is an issue ...but otherwise then don't worry about it. Feel free to ask questions... we like to help here
