Long story short, I was troubleshooting a cooling issue and swapped my watercooling loop with my stock intel cooler and then back again when I discovered my PC doesn't boot anymore. When I turn it on, everything lights up (LEDS, FANS, MOBO Lights, etc) and after 8 seconds it crashes again repeating the cycle over and over (no signal to monitor).

On closer inspection I noticed a small scratch on the motherboard near the CPU cooler holes. So I'm wondering would that be the cause and I'll be needing to replace it with a new mobo?

Also there is alot less thermal paste, but I certain it wouldn't cause an instant crash even with no thermal paste from my experience.

Scratch is the white mark above the CPU hole.

Got pictures?

Also, wouldn't hurt to reseat your hardware.

Pictures have been added.

Also only thing I move was the cooler, what I have remounted 3 times with no prevail. Also made sure all connection in my way were connected firmly.

Only other thing I think it could be is the Corsair H105 cooler bracket was loose before attaching the block, but after attaching it was firm.

Depending on how deep that scratch goes, it could very well have killed the board by severing several of those traces.

Anyway to tell for sure? As I don't want to ship a new mobo and find I'm having the same problem.

Only thing I don't get is why its still booting up for a couple of seconds and the mobo has lights working... Would it be because of the PSU is powering everything up and there is a delay before the computer realises the CPU can't carry data along a certain bus of the motherboard?

first of reseat the CPU and check the socket, just to be sure there is no thermalpaste down there, but that scratch could have killed the motherboard

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

During the boot process the motherboard goes through many procedures to make sure everything is working. That could very well be the case.

I'm not sure of a way to test it to make 100% sure since I haven't had this happen to me before and it's one of those odd issues. Least for me.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks like some traces are cut. Your best bet is to claim that it was like that from the get go and try to get it replaced.

I purchased it 2 years ago, so would I still be able to claim? :P

Have had so many issues with company I purchased it off, that I almost would'nt bother anyway....

Also I'm not sure but the CPU I have is not acting normal aswell, nor has it ever been (only just found out it wasn't getting normal temps in the past week when trying to overclock it). Like It's hitting 100C in 4 minutes (100% load) with watercooling and full after market fans setup.

I would recommend getting a new motherboard... Z97 motherboards are going for pretty cheap atm

A good black and red board is the AsRock Z97X Killer and from what I have heard, AsRock will replace your board if you have any issues!

Was looking into them or the MSI z97 gaming 5. Only trouble is I can't find any here in Australia for anywhere below $200!

Would you mind pointing me in the right direction, appreciate the help!

Can you give me a link to a retailer? The AU Pcpartpicker has nothing!

All these are Australia retailers.

Newegg seemed the only one with a compatible board, but $200 for an old z97 board seems a little steep (Gaming 5).

If you are lucky you might get it for dirt cheap!
