Hello,

Bought a GTX 1060 for my little brother, which has a single 8-pin PCIe express input. His PSU only has 6-pin PCIe express, and I'm not going to buy a brand new PSU. Would an 8 to 6-pin PCIe adapter work, like this for example:

Would it be negative for the power/hardware if I don't use original cable from PSU, but this adapter instead?

Deltaco Grafikkort 6-pin till 8-pin

Main:  1650 v2   @ 4,6GHz   -   X79 Deluxe                -   GTX 1080 @ 2000MHz   -   24GB DDR3 @ 2400MHz / CL10

Side:   i7-4790K @ 4,5GHz   -   Maximus 7 Hero        -   GTX 1070 @ 2114MHz    -  16GB DDR3 @ 2666MHz / CL12

I'm pretty sure yes.....

Thanks for your answer, but would like an answer that someone is 100 % sure on.

It should work fine.

1060s are only 120W cards and the PCIE bus + 6 pin will supply 150W. The extra two cables in the 8 pin connector are only extra ground cables, they don't supply any extra current

Lol so if you just shoved a 6 pin in an 8pin slot . ...if it fit that is.. then it wold work with the 2 blank holess ?

possibly, but I have never tried it.

My Corsair HX850i PSU does not come with solid 8pin connectors on the pcie cables. The supplied  PCIE cables are 6+2 pin units that have a pigtail with an additional 6+2 plug so you plug the 6 pin into the 8 pin socket and then plug the extra 2 pins in next to it to give you the full 8 pin connection.

The PCIE ends of the cable have standardized pinouts so electrically it will be providing all the power the card draws regardless. The card will check if there is PCIE power connected at startup but I don't know though if the card will check if the last 2 pins specifically are set to ground or not for it to operate.

If you shove a 6-pin in an 8-pin connector, it won't supply more than 75W. One of those ground pins is connected to a pull-down line to let the graphics card know it can draw 150W.

I'm using an 6 to 8 pin adapter, not plugging directly PSU 6 pin to GPU
