I am slightly confused by this, so if it doesn't read right then feel free to correct me below..

 

I have a laptop with an HDMI port. I want to connect a 1440p monitor by HDMI to the laptop.

The laptop runs a GTX660M which handles HDMI output (I think..), which is advertised as capable of a maximum resolution of 3840x2160. So an HDMI cable (do cables have versions?) and a monitor with HDMI 1.4 input is all I need and I'm good to go?

 

As an aside, the 1440p is not intended for gaming on. Would I be correct in thinking that the 660M lacks the horsepower for this in most newer titles?

It should work just fine,  and you could probably play some newer games just fine on lower settings.

My laptop has a 560M running a 1440p monitor over hdmi. It's fine for the performance you can expect using a mobile graphics processor.

It can be done, maybe watch a movie or play Minecraft or another less graphically-intense game considering you've only got a 660m, but it should work as long as the cable is graded for 1440p

...it will work. 1.4a HDMI can support even higher refresh rates..and chances are you have one. what laptop do you have?

Got a 'custom' one from PCSpecialist UK. Runs an i7-3610QM, GTX660M, 8GB RAM, 120gb Intel 520 SSD (I use an external Steam/media HDD, though there is a second bay) and a 17.3" 1080p screen. I carry it to lectures every day haha.

Explain? :P and there was me thinking that DVI+Audio=HMDI...

I personally do not like HDMI, I have had too many ports break.  I only use HDMI when I have to like on a blu-ray player or Xbox.  And the HDMI died on my PS3 so I had to switch to component cables.  So for me it comes down do bad experience in the past.

 

Also when I have taken thing apart that have an HDMI port I have always seen surface mounted pins never any through hole mounted.

people don't like HDMI because it doesn't have a lock mechanism like display port does. Personally never had an HDMI die on me or break, but DP seems way more solid. btw nice notebook! I'm not sure about the 660m I have 670mx and it does have 1.4a HDMI port... probably the 660m has one to although it's an older architecture card (fermi as opposed to kepler that you have in 670mx gpu's)

Thanks :D Interestingly the GeForce website lists the 670MX's maximum resolution as 2560x1600, which matches with the maximum resolution of HDMI 1.3 where the 660M is listed at 4K. Which is strange considering its a newer and more powerful chip, I guess that must just be a pre-driver-update spec or something. The 660M is Kepler though :)

OH my bad it does say it's kepler though this is strange since 670m is a fermi based card. Also http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-670MX.82603.0.html (The improved feature set now includes support for up to 4 active displays. Furthermore, high resolution monitors of up to 3840x2160 pixels can now be connected using DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI 1.4a if available.) I belive though that 4k is not supported at 60 Hz but 24 Hz  and 1600p is supported at 60 hz
