Monitor or GPU???

TheMoInMo

Hey guys, so I am looking at either getting an LG 34inch 3440x1440 ultrawide or getting a GTX 1080. Right now I have a 780 and a single 24inch, 60hertz, 1080p monitor. What should I upgrade first?

Thanks

Your current hardware could run the ultrawide but could not max out a lot of those games. If you are keen on graphics and FPS then get the graphics card first and monitor later. If you just want to have a 100% carefree 1080p gaming experience upgrade the GPU.

If it was me I would upgrade the GPU first. The peripherals are just a means to an end.

Spoiler

i7-6700k OC'd 4.5Ghz, Noctua NH-D15, EVGA GEFORCE GTX 1070 SC

i whould say gpu a good monitor will be useless without a good gpu for gaming

but on the other hand you wont be able to use the full power of the 1080 on your current monitor but i whould still go with the 1080 hope this helps !

I would get the GPU first but then start saving for the monitor because as mentioned above, a monitor is nice but if you can't really run it in games, then it's kinda pointless ;)

On top of that, monitors (especially 4K monitors) are going down in price almost every day so waiting a bit on that would probably be a cheaper option as well

Rather than going for one or the other, aim for a little lower in order to get both together. There is currently a drop for an LG 34" 1440p Curved display on massdrop, it's like 500$ CAD (I think) and a 29" one also. As for the GPU, you can always get a 1070, which is a good alternative budget wise, but you won't have Ultra graphics and solid 60 FPS though. Having a GTX 1080 card with a monitor that can't take full advantage of it isn't a realisticly purchase if you get tearing all the time. Similarly, having an expensive, high-end display that isn't utilized correctly because the graphics card is obsolete is no better.

Just use a bit of common sense and you'll do the right purchase for yourself. Identify and prioritize your needs and wants. GTX 900 cards are dirt cheap now and have decent performance still in AAA titles. Give that a look also.

Here's the monitor I saw on Massdrop LG 34" Ultrawide Display I hope it helps you getting both at the same time.

The other monitor I saw is a 27" 4k monitor also by LG. I can link you that if you are interested but it's at least 800$ to spend.
