I am currently trying to find the cheapest graphics card that can power 1440p.  I don't know if the 480 would be able to handle it (willing to OC).  I don't really want to dish out the cash for the 1070.

options: GTX1060 or RX480

1070 would do it beautifully but I think the 480 would still handle it OK, depending on your expectations.  Or if you're OK with older AMD stuff, perhaps a R9 Fury?  It seems to like the higher resolutions more than other cards that it is similar to at 1080p

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

I would say spring for the Fury X. I got mine on sale for 300 after rebate. Irun a 1440 screen and have no issues in Tomb Raider, GTA V, Shadow of Mordor, etc. All running at highest settings, or close to it and getting 60 fps.

Are you ok with the 4GB of Ram?

Sapphire R9-Fury is currently on sale for $260($240 after rebate) at Newegg, that will be great for 1440p compare to 480/1060.

Yeah, because it's HBM, it's basically like having 8 GB of GDDR5 I believe. The only time I run into issues is if I put GTA V on max settings and also MSAA.

No just no

hmb give the card insane acces speed but if u need or use more than 4gb then there's a bottleneck

At 1440p and with the top-tier games that I mentioned earlier, I never have that issue. I expect it to be much the same case for AndrewZ I made the same switch from a 390 to a Fury X and have not regretted the lower memory buffer at all. Obviously though, that's not acceptable for all applications.

R9 Fury, or Fury-X are good choices that are cheaper than a 1070.
