So I am putting together a parts list that I am hoping to buy for myself and put together for Christmas/my birthday, which are both coming up. I am not sure if I should go for the AMD FX-8350 or an Intel i5-6500. The AMD has 8 solid cores and is CHEAPER than the quad-core 6500, but that made me wonder if the cooler with the 8350 is garbage or something. Basically I'm scared of AMD because I can think of no reason why the price would be so low other than having to undercut Intel for competition or something. Also, I might cheap out and get a FX-6350 if someone shows me AMD CPUs won't blow up my PC (kidding, of course). Also, if I get one of the AMD options what motherboard should I get? Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

In most use cases the i5-6500 is the better out of the two. The FX is cheaper because they are much older and are less power efficient. Also it's not 8 solid cores. It is 4 physical cores, but 8 logical cores. At least my fx6300 is that way

I thought it had 8, but that's unimportant. I think I will go for the 6500 based on what you and RKRiley said. Thanks!

Wait for Zen and check the market then :)

even if AMD Zen does not crush intel, they shure will make them drop their prices a bit :)

if if you HAVE to buy now please no AMD FX (the AM3+ platform is super old and slow compared to modern intel chipsets)

its hard for me to say as an AMD fan  but.... yeha FX was shiiiiiiit

In 99% of workloads the 6500 will crush every FX

But as I told you Zen is right around the corner so WAIT :)

I don't think I will be in the market for Zen, from what I've seen they are more high end? (I will have to do more research) but if that drops Intel prices that would be great. Thanks.

AMD stated in their presentation, that it would be full scalability

so from server to potato laptop

BUT I think they will start releasing with the high end stuf

so yeh we don't know much but I personally would wait

The FX- 8350 has eight physical cores but each 2 cores share one FPU (Floating Point Unit) which is the bottleneck of the FX CPU's, The cores have to wait for each other accessing the FPU.

As @Metallus97 already mentioned, wait for Zen as it will hit the market in few months. Unless you really can't wait or Zen would be to expensive then go with that i5 6500 which is a solid CPU and far better that the FX 8350.

I will definitely wait until at least some of the Zen series drops, but I don't need it as a gift on Christmas. In fact I was hoping to buy some things during sales over a several month period, so waiting will be no biggie. If the Zen line is looking too expensive it might have at least made Intel prices drop, if even just 10 dollars. Thanks.
