I built my own PfSense router and it works correctly. When I connect to it directly with an ethernet cable I have complete internet access. Behind the PfSense box is my old router that I want to convert into just an access point. (old router link) I thought all I would have to do is disable dhcp on the old router and let the PfSense box handle it, but when I do that I'm unable to connect to my wireless and I have to reset the old router. It also doesn't work when I use an ethernet cable to the old router with dhcp disabled.

How do I set up this old router to be just an access point. Really appreciate your help.

Here's a rough sketch of my own network.

This is my opinion, it doesn't mean I'm right and is liable to change at any time. I may offend of which I apologize in advance.

im not sure exacly what you mean but

  1. hit the windows key on your computer, search for "view network connections"
  2. hold ctrl and click on your wireless network connection and your local area connection and right click and hit Bridge.
  3. if you mean what i think you mean then this should do it :)

Oh and during this process, be connected to your wifi, and have an ethernet cable from your computer to the router that you made

@tadhg Nah, i'm talking about converting my old router into a standard access point without a dhcp running on it. What enterprise ap's do.

When you disable DHCP on a router, you also essentially disable the WAN port (in some ways). move that cable between your pfsence box to the lan port and try connecting then.

EDIT: also, you cannot connect to your old router with DHCP disable because your pc doesn't know what is it's ip. to connect back to it's GUI, you need to manually set your NIC's default gateway to that router's ip.

Your completely correct. Didn't know that when you disabled dhcp it would also disable the wan port. I'm assuming this basically turns all the ports on the router into a basic switch. Thanks for all your help.
